Tourists heading for Niagara Falls taken to hospital following coach crash

A coach containing tourists on a trip to see the Niagara Falls on the US and Canadian border crashed on Interstate 90 in the town of Brutus in Cayuga County on Saturday afternoon, injuring all 57 occupants, according to New York State Police. Miraculously, it appears there were no fatalities.

The tour bus was heading westbound on Interstate 90 in Cayuga County when it exited the highway "for an unknown reason and rolled over onto the grassy shoulder," according to a statement from New York State Police.

It was reported that about 27 of the occupants on the coach, which included both adults and children, were taken to Auburn Community Hospital, where they were treated for injuries. At least two patients were transported from Auburn Community Hospital to SUNY Upstate to be treated for more serious injuries. There were no reports of any fatalities, Auburn Community Hospital spokesman Matthew Chadderdon told CNN.

The bus was coming from the town of Fishkill in the southeastern part of the state, he said. Brutus, the site of the crash, is near Syracuse in central New York and more than two hours away from Niagara Falls.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, police said. The driver of a tour bus from JTR Transportation based in Poughkeepsie, New York, was identified as Fermin P. Vasquez, 66, of Wingdale, New York. He was one of the people taken to Upstate Hospital for further treatment to their injuries.
