Tourists from Greater Manchester could be banned from visiting Cornwall

Greater Manchester residents face being banned from visiting Cornwall  if the region is moved into tougher Tier 3 lockdown measures.

Cornish tourism chiefs have urged accommodation providers in the area to cancel any existing bookings from customers in high risk regions and decline new bookings ahead of the October half term.

It comes after concerns people from areas with a high number of coronavirus cases could bring the disease with them into the South West, which has experienced relatively low levels of Covid-19, reports CornwallLive.

Bosses are now drafting up a list of "high-risk postcodes" to provide to tourism businesses to help them contact those from Tier 3 areas to cancel or rearrange their bookings.

It comes after the Welsh Government announced a ban on visitors from any high-risk area.

Chief executive of Visit Cornwall, Malcolm Bell, said: "I realise people’s concerns and the government have made it clear that the advice is not to travel out of a very high zones and that includes for holidays/breaks.

"Visit Cornwall are building a spreadsheet of postcodes in the very high risk areas to help accommodation businesses to be able to contact customers to cancel their holidays or rebook for next year.

"The problem with the proposal to ban people is how do you stop them? We cannot have police road blocks and even if we did - how do you really know where someone has come from if they hire a car outside the zones, etc?

"That is why we are helping all accommodation providers with the details of the zones and informing them that they must decline booking and contact customers from these areas."
