Tourists 'facing death by firing squad' for 'trying to smuggle drugs into Bali'

Several tourists on the Indonesian island of Bali could face the death penalty after being accused of trying to smuggle drugs into the country.

The four suspects were paraded in front of reporters at Bali international airport on Monday dressed in orange jumpsuits.

Indonesia has some of the world's toughest drug laws.

Frenchman Olivier Jover was arrested after a package containing 22.5g of cocaine was sent to him in Bali from France, the Daily Star reports.

It arrived at the airport with his name on it.

Tatiana Firsova, a beautician from Russia, was arrested after arriving on a flight from Doha, Qatar, last week.

She is accused of trying to smuggle 6.6g of cocaine into the country and could be jailed for up to 15 years.

Two Thai nationals - Kasarin Khamkhao and Sanicha Maneetes - were arrested last week after arriving from Bangkok.

According to authorities, nearly a kilo of methamphetamine was found hidden under their clothes during a search by  suspicious airport officials.

Himawan Indarjono, head of immigration at Bali's international airport,  told reporters: "A lab test confirmed all the packages contained methamphetamine weighing 958 grams in total."

The pair - a janitor and worker at a motorbike rental shop - could face death by a firing squad if convicted.

Death sentences can be reduced to long jail terms but some tourists have been executed in the past.
