Tourists banned from wearing bikinis in popular holiday resort

People have been banned from wearing bikinis in a popular Mediterranean holiday destination after what has been described as "widespread indecorous behaviour".

Thousands of visitors flock to the iconic Amalfi Coast in Italy each year, with Sorrento a must-visit spot for many. But those who do travel to the popular town will have to adhere to a new dress code.

Sorrento's mayor, Massimo Coppola, has said bare flesh was upsetting for locals, damaged the image of the town and would now incur fines of up to €500 (£425), according to the Times.

The mayor also said the town had recently seen “behaviour that is seen by the majority of people as contrary to decorum and to the decency that characterises civilised cohabitation". Under new rules, tourists must not walk around in swimwear or with bare torsos.

It comes after a car ban was announced for the Amalfi Coast in its entirety earlier this year. According to CNN Travel, a new scheme will ban certain tourists depending on their car license plate when travelling in the area.

The new system will mean cars can only access the famous 22-mile stretch every other day, during peak hours in peak season. Only vehicles with number plates ending in an odd number can use the road on odd-numbered dates, while those with plates ending in an even number can drive it on even-numbered dates.

These rules apply between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. for the entire month of August, plus weekends from June 15 to September 30. Holy Week around Easter, and the dates from April 24 to May 2, are also included.

People who live in the 13 towns along the coast are exempt, as are public transport vehicles including taxis. Rental cars will be included in the ban.

The move is aimed at reducing traffic that can be so bad it leaves people who live locally "trapped in their homes".
