Tourist 'severs artery' on water slide in Bulgaria

A holidaymaker claims one of her arteries was left severed following a horrific accident on an "extreme" water slide.

Jade Graves, 29, was left in intense pain after landing in a pool at the bottom of the "Space Jam" slide which had a 72ft, 90-degree drop.

She said she lost such a large amount of blood that she had to have a transfusion as she recovered in a Bulgarian hospital.

The mother told The Mirror she remembers feeling an intense dull pain in her lower pelvic area and was "horrified" when she looked down to see blood running down her legs.

It's claimed the "severe blood loss" led to her becoming faint and breathless.

She spent four days in hospital after having surgery and a blood transfusion.

Ms Graves, from Hull, is now considering legal action against the Aqua Paradise Water Park in Nessebar, Bulgaria - visited by hundreds of Brits every summer - saying she continues to struggle with "significant psychological trauma".

She suffered horrific injuries when she went down the slide on July 25 last year.

She claims she followed the lifeguard's safety instructions and crossed her arms and legs.

Ms Graves told Mirror Online: "I still can’t believe what happened to me on that slide.

"I was meant to be having a lovely holiday with my family but the whole experience has been traumatising.

"As I hit the water, I was in a lot of pain and I lost so much blood that I had to get a transfusion.

"It was a complete nightmare and I still get deeply upset about it.

"I am still uncertain as to what happened exactly, because I followed all the rules put to me by the lifeguard."

Ms Graves said a staff member looked after her as she lost a "significant" amount of blood, but she became faint and breathless.

After being taken to Life Hospital in Burgas by ambulance, she was given stitches, given a blood transfusion and underwent surgery to repair a severed artery, she said.

She claims she suffered profound arterial bleeding leading to haemorrhagic shock and secondary anaemia.

Her treatment in Bulgaria was covered by her travel insurance.

Ms Graves said she was forced off work for about five weeks while recovering from her injuries back home in the UK.

A week-long stay at the resort can cost more than £1,000 per person in peak season.

The Brit has hired the law firm of Irwin Mitchell to investigate the incident.

She said: "I really hope that the investigations can get to the bottom of it as I don’t want anyone else to have to go through what I have.

"I wish I had never set foot in that water park."

Ms Graves has called for more awareness on the potential dangers of water slides.

Cheryl Palmer-Hughes and Tejire Akaunu, serious injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, said in a statement: "This is a deeply concerning case where a young woman has sustained horrific injuries during what was meant to be a fun and relaxing time.

"Unfortunately we see a lot of these cases at this particular time of year, and Jade’s life has been completely turned upside down with her suffering mentally as well as physically.

"We have now begun our investigation into the accident and are determined to get Jade the answers she needs to help her move forward with her life."

Aqua Paradise Water Park, which describes itself as the "largest and most attractive" attraction of its kind in Bulgaria, with 25 water slides, has been contacted for comment.

On its website, a description of the Space Jam water slide reads: "Only once is not enough! This time with more adrenaline – downhill from 22 meters height on a slope of 90 degrees.

"This is the second slide, on which you can feel the true emotion of extreme experience."
