A tourist on the “best trip of his life” was killed when he posed for a photograph at a beauty spot and fell nearly 40 feet.
Juan Florez Estada had asked another tourist to take his photo above nudist beach Playa Escondida in Argentina when he lost his footing in a rockfall.
The 39-year-old fell onto the rocky beach 10 metres below and suffered multiple fractures and head injuries.
Lifeguard Mariano Serafini arrived first at the scene when he was alerted by screams and delivered first aid before Juan was winched up the cliff face and rushed to hospital.
He later died of his injuries in hospital in Mar del Plata.
Spaniard Juan had been on a month-long solo trip through Argentina and Peru when the tragedy happened.
As he prepared for the next leg of his South American adventure he had posted on social media: “Preparing the second part of the best trip of my life.”
Alejandro Fernández, a friend of Juan’s, said: “He was a happy guy, crazy like himself, fun, adventurous.
“A very good person who got along with everyone, made friends everywhere”
When lifeguard Mariano reached him Juan repeatedly told him: “My name is Juan, I'm from Madrid , I'm 39 years old."
Mariano later said of the rescue attempt: “I came swimming, I never thought of anything other than going forward and helping him.
“He left the beach alive, we did everything we could.”
Last year a British man narrowly avoided death after plummeting 130ft from a waterfall during a hike with friends.
The man was part of a group of eight international tourists who were holidaying on the island of Koh Samui, Thailand and attempted to climb to the top of Na Muang Waterfall, according to Thai Tiger.
One of the seven had hiked to the top of the 130ft high waterfall, shortly after heavy rain had left the rocks slippery in southern Thailand.
After reaching the top of the waterfall, the British man lost his footing and fell from the top.
He reportedly broke his hip.
The unnamed tourist who fell on Christmas Eve fell enough to sustain injuries that made him unable to get up and climb his way out.
The seven people he was with, trekked back to safety and raised the alarm with the authorities.
A Thai rescue crew assessed the situation and determined that the landscape was not suitable for a simple rescue.
Thai Tiger reported a team of 30 rescuers and local officials decided the best way to rescue the man was to lower him to the base.
