Tourist left bleeding on the ground after thug punches him in back of head in random Dublin city centre attack

A tourist was left bleeding on the ground after being randomly punched in the back of the head by a thug in the city centre.

Gardai are investigating after the American man was smashed over the head in broad daylight on Dame Street on Tuesday morning.

The attacker immediately ran from the scene with the tourist left bruised and confused.

Writing on Reddit, the man said he was "not doing anything stereotypically oud or obnoxious" and that strangely the attacker didn't seem to make any attempt to steal any of his possessions.

He wrote: "A Garda officer plainly saw the attack on Londis' CCTV system and it seemed like I was directly targeted, as the man went out of his way to come near me, hit me, and then fled.

"I was not doing anything stereotypically loud or obnoxious, and I did not wear any clothing that identified me as American.

"It also did not seem like there was any attempt to steal my cell phone or wallet.

"I have seen stories of pickpockets or other drunken behaviours in tourist-heavy areas like Temple Bar at night, but nothing so brazen as an assault in daylight."

Gardai confirmed they're are investigating and said the man didn't need any hospital treatment.

A spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating a minor assault which occurred on College Green, Dublin 2 yesterday morning, Tuesday 23rd April 2019 at approximately 10.45am.

"A 32 year old man was assaulted by an unknown male.

"The injured man did not require hospital treatment. No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing."
