At least 12 people have died after a tourist boat in India capsized on the Godavari river.

The accident took place near Kacchuluru village in the East Godavari district in the east of the country.

According to local reports there had been 61 people on the boat, called the Royal Vashishta, among which 50 were tourists and 11 were boat staff.

Nearby villagers were able to save 14 of the passengers who had been wearing life jackets, according to The Hindu.

One of the rescued passengers told a local television channel that the boat suddenly tilted in the river and overturned.

Some passengers tried to climb on top of the boat to save themselves, while others fell into the water.

Searches are ongoing for the 35 people who are still thought to be missing.

Most people on board the Royal Vashishta were tourists travelling to Papikondalu, a famous tourist spot near Rajahmundry.

Ramana of Punnami Travels, the owner of the boat, told reporters that the boat had a capacity of 90 passengers but had left for the tourist spot with 61 passengers.

He said the spot where the accident occurred is a dangerous with whirlpools and boats have to be steered cautiously.

Two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams each consisting of 30 members each have been sent to the scene to help with rescue operations.

The nationality of those killed is not known.  Two men steering the boat are thought to have been killed.

A probe has been launched into the tragedy.
