Tourist, 32, killed after stone falls on his head in historic Jordan city Petra

A tourist has died after a rock hell on his head in the historic city of Petra in Jordan.

The 32-year-old died at the scene of the tragedy, according to reports.

The man, from Italy, was with three others when it happened.

According to reports in Jordan, he was struck in the head by the rock.

An investigation has been launched to determine what happened.

Heavy rainfall the previous night caused the accident, according to the Petra Development Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA).

The sandstone city dates back to the third century (PA)

Several rocky sections in the city are set to be removed in conjunction with the UN, Roya News reports.

Pictures from the scene show a large crowd gathered around the patient, but medics were unable to save his life.

The sandstone city, which dates back to the third century, is popular with tourists.

Temples, tombs and palaces are spectacularly carved into the stone cliffs which surround Petra.

The Ancient City can be approached through a 1.2km long crack in the wall around it.
