Tourism bosses want Greece & Spain on 'green list' as only 1% arrivals tests positive

Holiday bosses are demanding Greece, Italy and Spain be added to the UK’s holiday green list after data showed less than one per cent of arrivals test positive for Covid.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps named a sparse list of 12 countries that can be travelled to without the need to quarantine on return, including holiday favourite Portugal, from Monday.

Though several to make the cut, including New Zealand and Australia, are not letting tourists in when borders re-open.

Spain, Greece, Italy and France are all on the amber list which requires a 10-day self isolation period when returning home.

Downing Street is set to undertake its first review of the traffic light system on June 7, but even then there is no guarantee which countries will be added - particularly after supposed shoo-in Malta missed out.

Data from NHS Test and Trace shows just 0.8 percent of arrivals from Greece in the last month have tested positive, reports the Mail.

Spain saw 0.7 per cent, and Italy 0.4 per cent.

Desperate to recoup unprecedented losses after the Government closed the borders to non-essential travel for months, travel bosses are calling on ministers to perform a quick U-turn.

The figures show that of the 3,823 people who took tests on day two after arriving from Spain between March 26 and April 22, only 26 were positive.

Of the 3,036 people who travelled from Italy, meanwhile, there were just 13 positive cases - and five of the 635 from Greece.

Portugal saw just three positive cases return out of 501.

Greek tourism minister Harry Theocharis told The Mail: "We consider Greece is at a very good status regarding the epidemic at the moment and every week it is getting better and better. This is what the data shows."

While Brian Strutto, of pilots' union BALPA, said the cautious approach is "extremely disappointing" for those in the travel sector and people "desperate to jet away on holiday".

EasyJet CEO Johan Lundgren said leaving holiday favourites off the non-quarantine list is “not justified by the evidence”.
