The 2022 Tour de France will begin in Copenhagen and take in the notorious climb of Alpe d’Huez as well as the cobblestones of Paris-Roubaix.
Fitness permitting, Tadej Pogacar will likely go into next year’s race as the overwhelming favourite for a third straight Tour title.
Pogacar was this week tipped by Eddy Merckx to exceed his record-equalling tally of five wins in cycling’s blue-riband event.
The 23-year-old Slovenian’s bid begins with a 13kilometre time trial on the streets of the Danish capital, before moving onto the cobblestones.
Stage five cuts across part of the Paris-Roubaix course for the first time in the race since 2018 when John Degenkolb proved victorious. Chris Froome had previously abandoned the race on the cobblestones of the famous classic race course.
The race moves into the higher mountains on stage 10 on a route connecting the ski resorts of Morzine and Megeve before the following day ends in another ski resort, Briancon, on the Col du Granon.
Stage 12 on Bastille Day sees the peloton tackle Alpe d’Huez for the first time since 2018, when Geraint Thomas won the stage en route to winning the Tour.
Hautacam will host a stage finish a week later before a 40km time trial on the penultimate day and the final procession into Paris.
