The 2025 Tour de France is well underway, and so too are the abandons, as we enter the final week of the race.
Every rider who starts the Tour wants to finish, but with 21 stages and the constant risk of crashes and illness, rider abandons are inevitable in Grand Tours, and riders will gradually drop out over the three weeks in France.
Across 20 stages so far, 24 riders have dropped out, leaving 160 riders in the peloton. With just one day to go, the only rider to leave was Yevgeniy Fedorov (XDS Astana).
While no riders left the Tour on stage 19, the day before to the Col de la Loze showed the accumulated fatigue, with three riders leaving the race: Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos), Enric Mas (Movistar) and Cyril Barthe (Groupama-FDJ) exiting on stage 18.
Danny van Poppel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) left the race before stage 17.
Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) abandoned on stage 16 after being diagnosed with pneumonia after thinking he was suffering from a cold before stage 16.
On stage 14, the most dramatic abandon so far took place as Remco Evenepoel climbed off his bike on the ascent of Col du Tourmalet. He wasn't the only rider who fell victim to the stage's savages, alongside some rumoured illness across the peloton.
Steff Cras (TotalEnergies) left early in the stage, citing illness, while Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) suffered an injury from a collision with road furniture. He spent some time at the medic's car before officially abandoning outside 100km remaining.
On Sunday, João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), the top climber in support of race leader Tadej Pogačar, abandoned the race halfway through stage 9, whilst two more riders failed to start stage 10.
Other early withdrawals were Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck).
Riders may abandon mid-stage after a crash or illness, climbing into a car or being taken away by ambulance instead of finishing the stage. Others will pull out overnight and not start a new stage in the morning.
Riders can also be taken out of the race by the organisation, either by finishing outside of the time limit or even being disqualified due to 'DNF' means 'did not finish', 'DNS' means 'did not start', 'OTL' means 'outside time limit' and 'DSQ' means 'disqualified'.
Last year, a total of 35 riders abandoned the Tour de France, with 131 riders making it to Nice.
