No sporting event is as photogenic as the Tour de France. The peloton swooping through sunflower fields, racing down Alpine mountains and cutting through the Pyrenean valleys help to create spectacular images, and this year was no different.

Geraint Thomas clinched his first yellow jersey, having taken charge of the race on stage 11 and not relinquished it, a race which has taken him through the dust of the treacherous Roubaix cobbles, via the intensity of 250,000 crazed fans on Alpe d’Huez, and under the breathtaking Millau Viaduct.

Here are some of the very best images from the race to tell the story of a compelling Tour de France.

Take a look through the gallery to see the best images of the race.
