A leading group of six riders has pulled out in front of the peloton, with Taylor Phinney (Education First–Drapac p/b Cannondale) back in that front group after briefly suffering a mechanical problem. They're 40 seconds ahead of the chasing pack.
Incidentally, only seven times out of the past 44 Tours has this stage not finished in a bunch sprint on the Champs-Elysées. Winners throughout a breakaway or a late attack were: Alain Meslet (1977), Gerrie Knetemann (1978), Bernard Hinault (1979), Pol Verschuere (1980), Jeff Pierce (1987), Eddy Seigneur (1994) and Alexandre Vinokourov (2005).
