Toulouse hostage incident: Women released after armed teenager takes them hostage at store in France

A teenager has released four women after holding them hostage for more than four hours in a convenience store in southwestern France.

The 17-year-old, who is reported to have been known to police because of prior involvement in the Yellow Vest protests, had made no demands before releasing the women, police said.

The teenager had earlier fired at least one shot over the heads of police and had demanded a negotiator. No injuries have been reported.

The gunman released all hostages but remained inside the store, surrounded by police.

Officials said the incident did not appear to be terrorism related.

Police set up a 300-metre security cordon around the store in the city's Blagnac suburb and told neighbours to stay indoors after the teenager took the women hostage around 4.15pm local time.

Officials said earlier it appeared to be a botched armed robbery.

The national terrorism prosecutor's office said it was following the situation.

"It's worrying. It all happened so quickly," said Mr Texier, who expressed surprise at the incident in what he described as a quiet neighbourhood on the banks of the Garonne River.

He said the convenience store has been run for decades by a woman and her daughter who live in the adjacent building.
