Tougher knife crime rules for Liverpool bars and clubs set to be approved

Liverpool's clubs and bars are set to face new rules to help address the "disturbing degree of knife crime" in the city.

The council's licensing and gambling sub-committee is set to meet on Monday to decide whether to adopt tougher rules for licensed premises in the city to  deter people from carry knives.

Under the rules, any new bar or club would have to show far more evidence to show how they would tackle knife crime.

Applicants will have to "assess the customer profile" of their premises and provide more robust evidence to councillors of how they will deter people from carrying knives.

That could include more knife arches and knife wands being used at clubs.

The report says: "Liverpool, in common with many cities nationwide, is experiencing a disturbing degree of knife crime and it is important that this Licensing Policy Statement recognises this and sets out proportionate measures to deter the carrying of knives into licensed premises in Liverpool.

"The need to address this issue is of particular concern in Liverpool following the tragic murder of 21-year-old Sam Cook in October 2017, who was the victim of a stabbing on licensed premises.

"Despite this crime highlighting the dangers of carrying knives it is apparent from recent Police statistics that the carrying of knives by certain sections of the community remains of great concern in Liverpool."

The meeting will come just over a week after a fight in Liverpool city centre saw two teenagers stabbed.

Measures to tackle crime already form a core part of applications for club and bar licences in the city but the new policy sees far more detailed attention paid to knife crime.

The licensing sub-committee will meet next week to endorse the plans.
