Tough to evaluate Seahawks defense during offseason

The Seahawks just wrapped up their offseason workouts, including the mandatory minicamp held last week. But for coach Pete Carroll, it was hard to get a good look at Seattle’s defense.

“Yeah, we’re using our imagination,” Carroll said Thursday. “We’re using our imagination right now. There’s six or seven guys that we think will wind up playing a lot of football for us that we’re holding out right now. But those guys will be ready for camp and ready to roll and it’ll be a pretty nice group.”

The Seahawks were missing the likes of Ezekiel Ansah, Bradley McDougald, Delano Hill and rookie Marquise Blair, to name a few.

But it wasn’t just the injuries that prevented Carroll from a thorough examination of the roster, it was also the NFL’s rules prohibiting contact and favoring offensive players that made it difficult to completely analyze the defensive squad.

Regardless, Carroll is looking ahead to training camp, when the pads come on and he can get a truly legitimate idea of where Seattle’s defense stands.

“I’m really excited about Bobby [Wagner], K.J. [Wright] and Mychal [Kendricks],” Carroll continued. “Those guys bring tremendous experience and play-making, more than we’ve ever had. And so I’m anxious to get those guys on the field at the same time and see what they can do. I think they’re going to help other guys play well. I mean, I know they will. Their communications and the savvy that they bring, that’s all you could ask for.

“So, it’s going to be a really fun group to put together.”
