Tough new local lockdown powers in force from tomorrow, says Boris

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced tough new local lockdown powers which will come into force from tomorrow.

Local authorities will be given the power to close cities or parts of cities - or even whole counties - in case of local flare ups of coronavirus.

Central Government ministers will also be given tough new rules to act fast to contain coronavirus.

Mr Johnson unveiled the new powers at a press briefing from Downing Street on Friday afternoon.

He said local authorities will, from tomorrow, be able to close premises and outdoor public spaces, cancel events and take other actions to contain coronavirus in their areas.

At the same time Government ministers will be able to close entire sectors in an area - such as retail or hospitality - order people to stay at home, stop people entering or leaving an area, restrict public transport and restrict the size of gatherings in an area.

This will alow for the rapid creations of more local lockdown such as has been seen in Leicester.
