Tough action on Burma

We are extremely concerned about the crackdown against Burma's pro-democracy movement (Calls for EU sanctions against Burmese junta, June 3). The detention of Aung San Suu Kyi and her colleagues, the deaths and injuries caused by the regime's repression of her supporters, the closure of all National League for Democracy offices and of universities, all prove that it is time for a tougher policy towards Burma's dictatorship.

Burma's democrats are not asking for a multi-billion dollar military coalition to save their country. They simply ask that we in Europe stop our companies funding the brutal dictatorship. They are depending on tough action from our government, not tough words. The prime minister has said that "we will confront tyrannies and dictatorship". A good start would be to push for immediate European-wide investment sanctions against Burma. If we fail to get EU agreement we should act unilaterally.
