Touching tributes paid to young Clare man who died in workplace accident one year after wedding

Tributes have been paid to a young Clare man who sadly died in a workplace accident on Friday.

Damien Carmody, aged in his 30s, died just days after he and wife Elaine marked their one-year wedding anniversary.

The popular young man died while working on a construction project near Doonaha in West Clare.

Emergency services, including two units of the fire service and an air ambulance, were called to the scene but he was pronounced dead soon after.

Mr Carmody was an integral part of his local GAA club O'Curry's who led the tributes to him online.

A club spokesperson said: "As a player, Damien was well respected by his team mates, their messages of tributes say, Damien always had your back, yes he did, not just in the club but also in the community.

"It was well known he'd always be rushing & late for training but he certainly made up for it when on the field where he gave it 110%.

"He played wing forward, sometimes wing back, whatever was asked of him and nothing stopped his determination on the field.

"He captained the intermediate team in 2012 and again was captain in 2016 in the senior team.

"He got involved in the Minor & U 21s and also was involved with O Currys/ Naomh Eoin Amalgamation. We were so lucky to have known Damien, to have him in our club but we are just numb and our hearts are so heavy today at the thought of his permanent absence from our lives.

"As a club and community we'll have to try cope with this huge loss together and we will do our best to support Damien's loved ones. Rest in peace Damien in God's loving Arms."

Dozens more locals expressed their condolences to the family of Damien after the tragic loss.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
