Emergency services were called after a member of the public discovered a man's body in an alleyway just before 1pm on Wednesday.

He was found in a passage between Harebell Street and Woodbine Street, both of which lie off Stanley Road, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

As police maintained a heavy presence in the area today, tributes were paid across social media.

Messages posted online included "rest in peace Jay", and "rest in paradise Jay".

Images were also shared on social media along with touching comments, while many have since offered their condolences to his friends and family.

The police probe remains in its early stages and the victim is yet to be formally identified.

Detectives made an arrest in connection with the investigation on Wednesday evening.

A 22-year-old man, who is from the Kirkdale area, was held on suspicion of murder. He was still in custody on Thursday morning.

Inquiries continued in the area today, with Reading Street, Woodbine Street and Harebell Street cordoned off and officers patrolling the area.

Last night, Detective Inspector Jennie Beck appealed for witnesses to come forward and said: “We understand the shock this will have caused within the local community and are doing all we can to establish the circumstances."

"We are carrying out a number of witness and CCTV enquiries tonight to establish what has taken place and so if you have seen anything or anyone suspicious in the Kirkdale area recently then please let us know and we will take action."
