Touching moment mum rings 'cancer-free bell' with son, 1, after months apart

This is the touching moment a mum celebrates beating cancer with her little boy after her gruelling treatment forced them apart for months.

Chloe-Leigh Todd, 20, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia last June after experiencing months of fatigue and unusual bruising.

But following long stretches in hospital undergoing intensive chemotherapy as well as radiotherapy and immunotherapy, she has finally been declared cancer-free.

The mum was invited to mark the happy occasion by ringing the bell that signifies the end of a patients' treatment with her son Dominic held tightly in her arms.

It came after months of painful separation from her beloved one-year-old boy due to coronavirus restrictions on hospital visits.

In October, Chloe-Leigh received a bone marrow transplant, as doctors warned that without out it the deadly disease would only return, reports ChronicleLive.

But now, thanks to a generous anonymous donor and the hard work of doctors at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital, she's finally been cured.

More than a 100 days after her transplant and with no signs of cancer, she returned to hospital with her little boy by her side to celebrate her recovery.

The heartwarming news followed painful stretches of up seven weeks at once without seeing her son, during which time Chloe-Leigh recalls Dominic tragically "didn't even recognise her".

Chloe-Leigh said: "When I found out I'd had the all-clear and I was ready to ring the bell, tears just ran down my face. It was so many months of fighting.

"I had spent months away from my little boy since I got diagnosed, it was the hardest thing I'd ever had to do.

"The first time I was in I couldn't see him for seven weeks, so it was really hard. When I got out of hospital he didn't even recognise me."

The mum says she has many people to thank for helping her get through the past eight months, especially her amazing mum Claire who shaved her head in solidarity during treatment.

But perhaps most of all, Chloe-Leigh says she wants the mystery "hero" donor who saved her life to know how much she appreciates him.

The 20-year-old said: "All my donor really knows about me is that at the time I was 19 years old and I had the transplant at the Freeman Hospital.

"All I know about him is that he was a 24-year-old English man and he was a 100% match for me on the Anthony Nolan list, same blood type and everything.

"I just want him to know how much I appreciate him and I'm so thankful for him, hopefully one day I'll get to meet this hero who has saved my life."

The mystery man gave bone marrow through blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan's register, with which Chloe-Leigh is encouraging others to get involved.

She added: "I would love people to sign up - the more people who are on there the more lives they can save," she said.

"I think it's such a good thing to do, especially with him being so young and still wanting to do something like that for someone else. The transplant was my best chance of survival and he gave me that."

Keen to help others who might be at risk, Chloe-Leigh has been raising awareness of the symptoms of leukaemia on TikTok, where she's built up a large following.
