Man reunited with beloved dog after she got lost in snow for seven days

This touching video shows the moment a man was reunited with his lost dog - after the pooch escaped and spent a week in the snow.

Roger Jacobs, 68, was devastated when seven-year-old Salty got lost just a few days before Christmas, as she snuck out a gate on his property and failed to return.

After seven straight days of searching, he and his family had all about given up hope - until a friend spotted her by a river in Huntley, Montana.

As he drove her back home, Roger rushed over to meet her and they reunited in the middle of a snowy plane - all caught on camera by his daughter, Becky Anderson.

Becky, 42, said: "My dad was blowing his whistle until he could see her.

"You can see him tuck his phone back in his pocket, put his gloves on and fall down to his knees with tears of joy."

On the afternoon of December 22 last year, the gate at Roger's home in Shepherd was left without the latch on and Salty managed to escape.

Basketball coach Becky said: "It made the Christmas holiday a little less bright.

"We spent day and night driving around looking for her, tried tracking her footprints in the snow.

"We initially believed she was chasing deer and then disappeared - as my dad would describe it, 'he was gut shot.'"

Father-of-three Roger had raised Salty from a puppy and has been trained to join him on hunting trips, so it was out of character of her to run off.

They called and whistled for her for nearly seven days, and posted online to see if anyone in the community had spotted her.

The family were starting to lose all hope of finding her alive, when Becky received a call from family friend Bill Lepley.

Bill said he'd spotted a dog across the Yellowstone River that could have been her.

The mum-of-three said: "I tried my best not to get my hopes up especially knowing Salty had been gone for a week in below zero temperatures."

She drove up with two of her children to see if it could be true.

She said: "When we pulled up, we all three barrelled out of the car jumping up and down.

"With one look we knew it was her."

Bill drove Salty to close to where cattle auctioneer Roger had been searching, before letting her out the car to reunite with her beloved owner.

The dog had only suffered a wound to her front leg and collected some ice between her toes after being out in the snow for nearly a week.

Becky said: "The wound on her leg is healing up nicely and she has settled right back into her normal way of life.

"She lost about ten pounds through the ordeal but other than that, you would never know anything had happened."
