Touchdown Wire’s advice to Kyler Murray: ‘Play faster’

A lot is on the shoulders of Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray. He is expected to take a big leap from his Rookie of the Year campaign in 2019 to hopefully becomes one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks in 2020.

Touchdown Wire’s Mark Schofield wrote about the advice he would give each of the NFL’s 32 starting quarterbacks.

What does he have for Kyler Murray?

“You’re fast. Play faster.”

Last season the Arizona Cardinals rookie passer proved that he belonged in the NFL, completing 64% of his passes for 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. His achievements on the field led to him being named the Offensive Rookie of the Year. He is set up for success in the year ahead in part to the expected year two leap from sophomore quarterbacks, coupled with the Cardinals’ acquisition of DeAndre Hopkins.

But if there is one thing that Murray can do to speed that leap along, it is to play faster. He showed flashes of making anticipation throws and quick adjustments to defensive rotations, but the faster he plays – both with his feet and his mind – the more likely he lives up to the year two hype.

Perhaps the one thing Murray had to work on the most as a rookie was avoiding negative plays. He got better about that as the season progressed. Entering year 2, he is able to start looking at defenses and know what he is seeing.

If he can play faster, his potential for greatness might be limitless.

If that ends up being the case in 2020, watch out for what the Cardinals can achieve, even in a tough NFC West.
