Tottenham have confirmed the exit of academy youngster Marcus Edwards who has completed his move to Portuguese side Vitória.

Edwards leaves north London having made just one senior appearance for the club - against Gillingham in the EFL Cup in September 2016.

The attacking midfielder was once highly-regarded at Spurs, with Mauricio Pochettino famously commenting the youngster had some of the same qualities as a young Lionel Messi.

Edwards joined the Spurs academy aged eight and represented England at under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19 and under-20 levels.

Last year he found first-team opportunities during a spell out on loan in Netherlands, where he made 25 appearances for Excelsior in the Eredivisie, scoring two goals.

Previously, he had a loan spell at Norwich at the start of last year, but only made one Championship appearance.

Edwards could line up against Tottenham’s north London rivals Arsenal in the Europa League this season, with Vitória drawn into the same group as the Gunners.
