Tottenham will see 'old Harry Kane again' after injury as Toby Alderweireld hails 'unbelievable' desire

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld is confident fans will see "the old Harry Kane" again when the Premier League season resumes later this week.

The England captain had scored 17 goals in 25 appearances across all competitions in 2019-20 before suffering a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring at Southampton on New Year's Day.

Such an injury required surgery and prevented Kane from making any further appearances before English football was halted by the coronavirus pandemic in mid-March, while also leaving questions marks over his fitness for a continent-wide European Championship that has since been rescheduled for next summer.

However, the 26-year-old has made good progress with his recovery and the aforementioned delay has limited the number of games Spurs had to make do without their talisman up front.

Kane, Heung-min Son, Steven Bergwijn and Moussa Sissoko all featured in a friendly defeat by Norwich at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday, with Jose Mourinho boosted by the return of several key players from injury ahead of a potentially key home clash against Manchester United in five days' time.

He has also been impressing in training and Alderweireld is fully expecting his team-mate to hit the ground running on his return to competitive action - a crucial factor for Tottenham, who resume the campaign in eighth place and seven points adrift of the top four.

“In training he looks fully fit, top fit, so we’re going to see the old Kane again,” Alderweireld told The Guardian.

“He has been out for a longer period so his desire to show everyone is unbelievable, so you’re going to see a very good Kane.”
