Tottenham are out for a second European trophy in quick succession when they take on Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup this evening. Thomas Frank takes charge of his first competitive game of the north Londoners since his move from Brentford earlier this summer, and he will lock horns on the touchline with the experienced Luis Enrique.
Enrique led PSG to that elusive Champions League glory in Munich, where Paris thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 at the Allianz Arena as their young stars struck fear into the footballing world. Now, it is up to Spurs to keep them out and upset the apple cart in Udine, where they face the Ligue 1 champions.
Cristian Romero will lead out Spurs for the first time since being named club captain this morning, after Heung-min Son departed for pastures new at LAFC. Midfielder Yves Bissouma misses out entirely after Frank decided to leave him at home after turning up for training late “one too many” times, according to the Danish manager. PSG 3-2 Tottenham
22:08 , Oli GentGoal! Lee. Who scored the goal to get PSG back into the game. Up he steps, and strokes it into the corner. Vicario sent the other way.
PSG 2-2 Tottenham
22:07 , Oli GentMissed! Big penalty, this, as Mathys Tel is up for Spurs. Here he comes... but he’s put it wide!
PSG 2-2 Tottenham
22:06 , Oli GentGoal! Dembele now for PSG. Tucks it away, full of confidence.
PSG 1-2 Tottenham

PSG 1-2 Tottenham
22:05 , Oli GentGoal! Goncalo Ramos for Paris... and he smashes it straight down the middle! PSG on the board.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
22:04 , Oli GentGoal! Bentancur up for Spurs’ second, and he lashes home!
PSG 0-1 Tottenham
22:04 , Oli GentMissed! Vitinha is up next. He’s had a tough game thanks to Pape Matar Sarr, and, with a stuttering, walking run-up, he looks to clip it the other side, but he hits the post! Advantage Spurs!
PSG 0-1 Tottenham
22:02 , Oli GentGoal! Solanke makes no mistake with the shortest run-up of all time!
Time for spot-kicks
22:02 , Oli GentGood news for Spurs. They’ll be taking their penalties in front of their fans. Dominic Solanke steps up first.
Matt Verri reports
21:57 , Oli GentSpurs can be grateful for the full-time whistle because that was only going one way. Dropped deeper and deeper, looked exhausted and they were punished. Can they pick themselves up for penalties?
FT: PSG 2-2 Tottenham
21:57 , Oli GentThere we have it. What drama right at the end. To penalties we go.
Matt Verri reports
21:56 , Oli Gent90+5 mins: Spence has his head in hands as he looks to the sky - Spurs stung right at the death. Frank screaming at him to to stay positive but that is a hammerblow for Spurs.
PSG 2-2 Tottenham
21:54 , Oli GentGoal! 90+3 mins: They’re level, and it’s Goncalo Ramos with a bullet header! That’s what happens when you put a striker on the pitch. It’s fired across from Dembele, and Ramos nods home!
PSG 1-2 Tottenham
21:50 , Oli Gent90 mins: Six added minutes as Bergvall replaces Sarr.
PSG 1-2 Tottenham
21:49 , Oli Gent89 mins: Close! It’s all hands on deck now as the ball is pinged out to Mendes who strikes from range, and it’s deflected behind for another corner. Sarr flicks away the set play, but PSG come again.
Matt Verri reports
21:46 , Oli Gent87 mins: Strap yourselves in. Spurs have got five minutes plus stoppage-time to hang on and this is going to get very, very nervy. Time to go through the dark arts manual.
PSG 1-2 Tottenham
21:45 , Oli GentGoal! 85 mins: They’re back in it, and it’s Lee with the goal. The keeper is unsighted as the cross comes in. Lee takes a lovely touch from outside the area, and he thunders one home past Vicario. Game on.
Matt Verri reports
21:43 , Oli Gent83 mins: Tel keen to make an impression after coming on and that's a couple of feet away from being a penalty. Not quite the impact Frank discusses with him when speaking in length to him on the touchline, I'd imagine. Thankfully for Tel is leads to nothing.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:39 , Oli Gent80 mins: Kudus gets a hero’s reception as he leaves the field, replaced by Mathys Tel.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:37 , Oli Gent78 mins: PSG have had 70% possession this evening. Let that sink in.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:37 , Oli Gent77 mins: Doue is replaced by Goncalo Ramos.
Matt Verri reports
21:33 , Oli Gent75 mins: Ideal situation for Frank, who can bring Solanke on and get 20 minutes in his legs before the Premier League opener on Saturday. Couldn't have gone much better for the Spurs boss tonight. So far, that is.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:33 , Oli Gent73 mins: Two changes for Spurs with Archie Gray and Dominic Solanke both coming on for Richarlison and Palhinha.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:31 , Oli Gent72 mins: Close! Fabian Ruiz has looked lively since coming on and he feeds Dembele on the edge of the area, but the Frenchman side-foots wide of the target.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:27 , Oli Gent68 mins: Ibrahim Mbaye replaces Barcola, and Kang-In Lee is on to replace Warren Zaire-Emery.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:27 , Oli Gent67 mins: No goal! Paris think they’ve scored as Doue works some space for a left-footed shot. Vicario saves well before Ruiz follows in, and it’s well blocked by Danso. It comes out for Barcola, who slots home the rebound, but the flag is up!
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:26 , Oli Gent66 mins: Sarr is getting into more advanced positions looking to support the front two, and he peels into the right channel to hare after another ball that’s played there. He gets a shot off that’s blocked by Pacho, but the flag is up against the Spurs midfielder this time around.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:24 , Oli Gent64 mins: Great block! Spurs keep the ball out brilliantly as Hakimi breaks into the box before Doue gets a shot off that is blocked. Danso clears as Spurs survive a scare.
Matt Verri reports
21:22 , Oli Gent63 mins: Spurs firmly in 'winding the clock down territory'. Danso took an age to take that long throw-in and then kicks the ball away there to earn himself a yellow card. Still a long way to go...
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:20 , Oli Gent61 mins: Kvaratskhelia is cutting a frustrated figure, and Enrique hauls him off. Fabian Ruiz is on, and that means that Doue will move into the No9 position, with Dembele shifting wide, surely?
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:19 , Oli Gent60 mins: The delivery is shorter this time, and Vitinha clears at the near post.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:19 , Oli Gent59 mins: Porro goes for a whipped effort from 30 yards, looking to get it up and over the wall, and it comes off Doue’s head for a corner, which the right-back will come over and take on the near side.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:18 , Oli Gent58 mins: Sarr is showing his sharpness as he’s all over Pacho, and he nabs the ball off the centre-back, who is forced into a desperate pull-back that earns him a yellow and Spurs a free kick. Porro is over this one.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:16 , Oli Gent57 mins: Richarlison has been booked for a foul, while Barcola is also cautioned for his display of frustration.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:16 , Oli Gent56 mins: Spurs clamour for a penalty as Porro goes down in the Paris box. The right-back darts into the area and is felled by Mendes, but the replay shows that the full-back got the ball.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:14 , Oli Gent55 mins: This is a bit of a display of who’s had a pre-season and who hasn’t. Spurs are looking sharp and cohesive, while Paris just aren’t clicking as they were at the back end of last term.
That said, Spurs are nullifying the French side’s threats quite brilliantly so far.
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:13 , Oli Gent53 mins: Close! That is a super ball in from Kudus from the left and Danso is unmarked at the far post. He looks to power it inside the near post, and some fans think it’s in as it brushes the side netting on its way wide! PSG are all over the shop defensively!
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:12 , Oli Gent52 mins: Kvaratskhelia fouls Richarlison and that’s the first real demonstration of frustration that we’ve seen from a Paris player.
Matt Verri reports
21:10 , Oli Gent50 mins: First match as the club's new captain and Romero marks it with a goal. PSG have been a mess at defending set-pieces all match and it costs them again here. Not the best goalkeeping you'll ever see - a reminder that PSG have left Donnarumma out as they try to sell him...
PSG 0-2 Tottenham
21:08 , Oli GentGoal! 48 mins: It’s two, and it’s Cristian Romero! It’s another set play that catches PSG cold. Porro floats it into Romero unmarked at the back post, and he ghosts in to nod home past Chevalier, who gets a hand to it, but can’t keep it out!
PSG 0-1 Tottenham
21:07 , Oli Gent47 mins: Close! Sloppy from Vitinha as he gives the ball away and Richarlison has a chance to blast one. He does so, and Chevalier is equal to it to parry.
Kick off
21:05 , Oli Gent46 mins: We’re back underway.
HT: PSG 0-1 Tottenham
20:49 , Oli GentThere’s the interval. A lively end to the opening period after a bit of a tough watch to start with. Spurs lead at the break.
What will the second half bring?
PSG 0-1 Tottenham
20:48 , Oli Gent45 mins: Off the post! How did that not go in! Spurs so close to a second as Richarlison rattles the post with a header from point-blank range!
PSG 0-1 Tottenham
20:47 , Oli Gent45 mins: One added minute.
Matt Verri reports
20:44 , Oli Gent41 mins: If there was going to be a Spurs goal it did feel as though it might look like that. Set piece lumped long into the box, a bit of a scramble and Van de Ven is the quickest to react. Not exactly a thing of beauty but the Spurs fans do not care in the slightest.
PSG 0-1 Tottenham
20:42 , Oli GentGoal! 39 mins: Spurs are ahead, and it’s Micky Van de Ven! It’s been a bit smash and grab, but they’ve asked the question from the set play, and they’ve made the most of it! Vicario punts it towards Romero peeling away on the far side, and the captain knocks it down for Palhinha, who looks to hook it home. Chevalier makes a flying save, but Van de Ven nets the rebound!
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:41 , Oli Gent38 mins: Great play from Kudus to bring down a long punt forwards. The Ghanaian shows good strength to hold off Mendes and earn the free kick from the Portugal left-back.
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:38 , Oli Gent36 mins: Chance! Hakimi looks for the cut-back through Spence’s legs and it ricochets into Dembele’s path at some pace, but the Frenchman can only hash it well over the top.
Matt Verri reports
20:37 , Oli Gent35 mins: Spurs just starting to get pushed back a bit, struggling to find that ball out. Defending solidly enough but it's getting a bit lonely for Richarlison up front. Very much a back five rather than a three at the moment
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:35 , Oli Gent33 mins: Some shaky moments at the back for Paris as Kudus and Richarlison are making nuisances of themselves in the PSG box. Pacho misjudges a clearance that almost falls for Richarlison, but it’s hacked clear desperately at the last.
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:33 , Oli Gent31 mins: Not much else to update you on in what’s been a game of very few chances so far. It’s been a bit of a chess match, with both sides trying to work each other out. Spurs are doing an excellent job at keeping their compactness, while also triggering their press at the right times.
Matt Verri reports
20:30 , Oli Gent28 mins: It was rumoured earlier this summer that Kevin Danso won a long-throw audition in training at the start of pre-season - I can believe it. He's flung two into the box that have both nearly led to chances.
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:29 , Oli Gent26 mins: Danso launches a long throw into the box, as Hakimi nods clear, but it’s not convincing as Spurs rebuild to come again...
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:26 , Oli Gent23 mins: Close! The first save for Chevalier to make on his PSG debut as Dembele is sloppy in possession. Kudus drives through the heart of Paris, feeding Richarlison ahead of him. The Brazilian looks to take Chevalier by surprise, and the deflection forces the goalkeeper to tip it over! The resulting corner is met by Bentancur, who rises highest, but his header is wayward.
Matt Verri reports
20:21 , Oli Gent20 mins: Press has been superb from Spurs so far. Getting real joy up the pitch against a PSG side lacking in sharpness after a month out of action - Sarr in particular full of energy. Question is how long can Spurs keep it up?
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:19 , Oli Gent18 mins: We’ve not seen much of Desire Doue so far, even though he’s playing in that central role behind Dembele. There is myriad interchange of positions from that Paris front four, but we’ve not seen enough of the man that is inhabiting that No10 hole as yet.
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:17 , Oli Gent16 mins: That’s the downside of the back five. Spurs are looking to hit the ball in behind for Richarlison to chase in the channel, but the Brazilian is isolated. They need some more men around him, else he’ll get crowded out.
Matt Verri reports
20:15 , Oli Gent14 mins: The full Richarlison experience there. Sublime touch to bring that cross down... and then a dreadful ball into the box. Spurs keen to go direct and get crosses in at every opportunity in the early stages.
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:15 , Oli Gent13 mins: That’s wasted. Encouraging to see Kudus getting involved as he drifts to the right side, cuts inside onto his left, and teases an inswinger into the box towards Richarlison. The Brazilian does well to control the looping ball, but he looks to send his own delivery into the middle, which he shanks behind.
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:12 , Oli Gent11 mins: Palhinha is down after a kick in the face from a stray boot of Barcola. The Portuguese midfielder is ok, and we continue.
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:11 , Oli Gent9 mins: Close! Good football from PSG down the left as Barcola and Doue link before feeding Kvaratskhelia in the box. The winger takes it under his spell, spins, and strikes, but it’s scuffed wide of the target.
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:10 , Oli Gent7 mins: Strong Spurs defending so far. PSG’s fearsome four are looking to pick up pockets in that compact quintet, but the north Londoners are shutting every door.
Matt Verri reports
20:05 , Oli Gent4 mins: I'd suggest Vitinha might want to get comfortable with Sarr's company. The Spurs midfielder is parking himself right on the PSG man whenever the French side are in possession.
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:04 , Oli Gent3 mins: Brave from Spurs as they’re looking to press the Ligue 1 side high. Kudus, Sarr, and Richarlison all stream forward at pace looking to pinch the ball back in high areas.
PSG 0-0 Tottenham
20:03 , Oli Gent2 mins: Tactical observations of the Spurs shape. It is a back five for the Europa League winners. Spence and Porro are the wing-backs, with Danso, Romero, and Van de Ven the central defensive trio.
Kick off!
20:00 , Oli Gent1 min: We are underway!
Matt Verri reports
19:59 , Oli GentDaniel Levy not in attendance tonight as his daughter is starting university in the USA and he is with his family. Vinai Venkatesham and Fabio Paratici both here for Spurs
Five minutes to kick off
19:57 , Oli GentThe players are out! Kick off is fast approaching...
3-5-2?
19:45 , Oli GentSo, it’s a 3-5-2 shape for Spurs this evening, it seems.
Classic Thomas Frank. He knows his side are the underdogs, and they’re set up just like that.
Don’t take that as a sign of weakness, however. His Brentford sides could seriously hurt bigger sides with their pace on the counter-attack in their own 3-5-2, and this Spurs team can - if they play to their true potential - be exactly the same.
Matt Verri reports
19:40 , Oli GentBig occasion for Junai Byfield, with the 16-year-old named on the bench for Spurs tonight. Making everyone feel absolutely ancient by being born in 2008. He made his debut earlier this summer and has clearly impressed Thomas Frank in pre-season.
Key battles
19:31 , Oli GentLet’s have a look at the key one-v-one battles across the park, shall we?
The first obviously comes in the heart of the Spurs defence, and how they will have three centre-halves dealing with the lone ranger Ousmane Dembele.
Will one go in with him when he drops deep, or will they not be suckered into the trap that the Frenchman is trying to lay, looking to isolate Van de Ven and Danso against Kvaratskhelia and Barcola?
Will the wing-backs be forced to pick up the Paris full-backs? If so, Djed Spence and Pedro Porro are in for a long evening.
They’ll need the assistance of the wide midfielders in the engine room to shuttle over into the channels and help to avoid numerical overloads, which PSG will be sure to want to implement all over the field.
From an attacking perspective for Spurs, that midfield of PSG looks like it can be got at. Palhinha, Bentancur, and Sarr will all be hungry to pinch the ball off Vitinha and Zaire-Emery and look to release Kudus and Richarlison swiftly on the break, and get them running at Marquinhos and Pacho with the full-backs upfield.
Strong side from Paris
19:15 , Oli GentThe Ligue 1 champions are going all-out attack, it seems.
It’s a four-pronged frontline from Luis Enrique, who tucks Desire Doue behind the central striker Ousmane Dembele as a free-roaming No10, but he is sure to pick up pockets in wide areas as that quartet interchanges at some rate of knots.
Bradley Barcola and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia keep the width and will test both Spurs’ wing-backs directly, while it is a somewhat lightweight midfield duo of Vitinha and Warren Zaire-Emery, which Thomas Frank could think his battlers in the engine room could get the better of in the physical challenge.
PSG lineup
19:09 , Oli GentConfirmed PSG XI: Chevalier; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Vitinha, Zaire-Emery, Barcola, Doue, Kvaratskhelia; Dembele
Subs: Bellucci, Hernandez, Kamara, Lee, Beraldo, Ramos, Mbaye, Ruiz, Safonov
Matt Verri reports
19:00 , Oli GentSpurs have tweeted out the lineup as though it's a back four with Spence at left wing, but you'd imagine it's more likely that Frank has shifted to a back five tonight. Danso comes in to join Romero and Van de Ven and it's a three-man midfield in front of them. Spurs relying on Kudus and Richarlison to provide the attacking spark.
Tottenham lineup
18:49 , Oli GentConfirmed Tottenham XI: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Danso, Van de Ven, Spence; Bentancur, Palhinha, Sarr; Richarlison, Kudus
Subs: Kinsky, Austin, Davies, Vuskovic, Byfield, Gray. Bergvall, Odobert, Tel, Johnson, Solanke
Standard Sport prediction
18:30 , Oli GentThis is likely to be an uphill battle for Thomas Frank in his first competitive game in charge.
Luis Enrique has got Paris playing in a free-flowing, fluid style that suits their pace on the counter-attack and lets their young, exuberant forwards express themselves fully by getting on the ball and at their men.
How Spurs’ defence can hold out against that remains to be seen.
How fit will Dominic Solanke be? What impact will James Maddison’s long-term absence have? How will Mohammed Kudus fare on his full debut?
Let’s find out.
PSG to win, 3-1
