Tottenham vs Leeds LIVE

Tottenham spurned the chance to move four points clear of West Ham United in the battle to stay in the Premier League after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United on Monday. Roberto De Zerbi’s side went ahead through Mathys Tel’s sumptuous curler, but the Frenchman went from hero to zero as he conceded a penalty later in the second period.

He was adjudged to have kicked Ethan Amapdu in the head as the pair contended for a high ball, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised emphatically from the spot. Antonin Kinsky saved superbly from Sean Longstaff deep into the 13 additional minutes, as the midfielder broke into the box and lashed an effort from close range.

Kinsky tipped the strike onto the bar, as Spurs clung on, and they were denied a late penalty as Lukas Nmecha collided with the returning James Maddison, who went down under the striker’s challenge. The result leaves the hosts two points clear of the drop zone with two game remaining, and they travel to Chelsea next.

"He was sorry for the mistake, it can happen to a young player."

De Zerbi gives thoughts on Maddison penalty claim

22:51 , Oli Gent

"I don't know. I think the referee was not in the right condition today,” De Zerbi told Sky Sports.

"Maybe he was not so calm. Nothing for the result, I didn't see the situation of Maddison.

"Yesterday, in West Ham vs Arsenal, it was tough for everyone. Maybe for the referee as well.

"I don't want to speak about the Maddison penalty, I didn't see."

Sam Tabuteau reports

21:31 , Oli Gent

71 mins: He has not seen him coming and his eyes are on the ball, but the contact from Tel is awful. As clear a case as you will see of an attacker trying to defend his own box and struggling to know his own bearings.

Tottenham 1-0 Leeds

21:21 , Oli Gent

61 mins: We’re past the hour mark and Spurs are in the driving seat. A second would really settle the nerves around these parts. As it stands, they’re four points clear of West Ham with two games to play.

Tottenham 1-0 Leeds

21:19 , Oli Gent

58 mins: Close! Kolo Muani breaks down the right as Bornauw misjudges the flight of the ball. He cuts it back for Richarlison, who completely miscues it! What a chance!

Tottenham 1-0 Leeds

21:16 , Oli Gent

55 mins: Struijk is down feeling it after suffering a knock to his hip before half time. Bornauw is stripped and ready to replace the Dutchman.

Sam Tabuteau reports

21:14 , Oli Gent

54 mins: Spurs have the goal they have been threatening as they take the lead after 51 minutes. It’s Tel with the goal and you have to say he deserves it. After a slow start, he has grown into the game and that is a delightful bit of quality to beat Darlow.

Goal! Tottenham 1-0 Leeds

21:12 , Oli Gent

52 mins: It’s there, and Spurs are ahead! Porro’s delivery is nodded away, only as far as Tel, who slots into the top corner with a beauty!

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

Kick off!

21:06 , Oli Gent

46 mins: Back underway.

Sam Tabuteau reports

20:58 , Oli Gent

Tottenham have had all the territory this half, and the stats reflect that. Spurs have had 18 touches in the opposition box while Leeds have had five. That said, they come within a toe of potentially conceding a penalty after Calvert-Lewin is ruled offside after being hauled down by Udogie. This game remains firmly in the balance.

HT: Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:49 , Oli Gent

There’s the interval.

A couple of scares for Spurs, but they are on the front foot here. All they need is that elusive first goal...

What will the second half have in store?

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:48 , Oli Gent

45+2 mins: Offside is the call. Spurs fans breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:47 , Oli Gent

45+1 min: Ooh, is that a penalty? Calvert-Lewin is played in by Aaronson and gets the wrong side of Udogie. He goes down, but the flag is up. Hang on, there’s a VAR check, and the Italian may have played the Leeds striker on...

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:46 , Oli Gent

45 mins: Two added minutes.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:45 , Oli Gent

44 mins: Free kick, Spurs. Tel is felled on the left flank and it gives Porro a nice angle to swing one in from with his right. He whips it in, but there’s too much on it.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:42 , Oli Gent

42 mins: A booking for Danso as he upends Aaronson, who speeds after the loose ball. The Austrian stands his ground, and picks up a caution.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:40 , Oli Gent

39 mins: Close! Porro delivers, Bentancur climbs and meets it, but nods wide of the target.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:39 , Oli Gent

38 mins: Good work by Porro high and wide down the right, winning the corner off Bijol. Another opportunity for Spurs to try and notch that elusive opener.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:37 , Oli Gent

36 mins: Close! Another huge chance for Spurs as Palhinha persists in the box with the bobbling ball. It falls for the Portuguese, who blazes over the top.

Sam Tabuteau reports

20:35 , Oli Gent

34 mins: Well that is a first. Darlow has been penalised for holding onto the ball for too long. You rarely see that given, and it nearly leads to the opening goal as Porro's shot from the resulting corner is cleared off the line. Spurs have reacted well to that spell of Leeds pressure.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:34 , Oli Gent

33 mins: Spurs are banging on the door as they earn a corner through Darlow’s dawdling. Porro has an effort which is well blocked, and Richarlison scuffs at another.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:33 , Oli Gent

32 mins: Kolo Muani breaks down the right but doesn’t get his head up as he fires a blind ball into the box, but there’s no-one in a white shirt on the end of it. The second phase is worked out to Porro, who sends in a delivery which Richarlison gets a boot to, but it takes a nick off Ampadu and Darlow claims.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:27 , Oli Gent

30 mins: Better from Tel as he weaves inside and out down the left and looks to get a shot off, but his effort is deflected behind.

Sam Tabuteau reports

20:26 , Oli Gent

26 mins: The Spurs supporters have been quiet up to now, but I think they realise their team need some encouragement. It has been a nervy last five minutes or so, with Leeds working by far the clearest opening of the match. Having seen the replays, Kinsky has done superbly to keep out Rodon's header.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:25 , Oli Gent

24 mins: Danso winds up a long throw and Darlow is able to punch clear. Harmlessly away from Richarlison’s attempt to help it back into the area.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:23 , Oli Gent

22 mins: Good save! De Zerbi calls for calm before Kinsky saves well from Rodon from the Leeds free kick, with the header looking to nestle into the bottom corner.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:20 , Oli Gent

20 mins: Hearts were in mouths for Spurs there as Tel tries to hook away a clearance tight to his own byline, but it’s almost like a cross to Calvert-Lewin in the box! Danso nods clear, and the danger is averted.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:17 , Oli Gent

17 mins: A couple of corners give Spurs their first real chance to get a ball into the box. Tel’s deep delivery is towards Richarlison at the far post, but it’s deflected behind. The winger gets another go from the right this time, but it’s nodded away at the front stick by James.

Sam Tabuteau reports

20:15 , Oli Gent

15 mins: De Zerbi is already getting a talking to from the ref, who is roundly jeered by the home support. De Zerbi has quickly endeared himself to the Spurs faithful, and well a win tonight would do his popularity no end of good.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:14 , Oli Gent

13 mins: No real chances for either side in a slow start here. De Zerbi will likely want his side a bit more proactive in build-up.

Sam Tabuteau reports

20:10 , Oli Gent

10 mins: Tottenham have started confidently without really threatening in the final third. They are popping the ball round well under pressure, but will need a bit more from Tel and Kolo Muani when they get in possession.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:09 , Oli Gent

8 mins: Justin is down after a blow to the face from Kolo Muani, and blood streams out of his nose. Wing-back is not an area where Leeds have much depth, with Gudmundsson and Bogle already out, and James filling in today.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:06 , Oli Gent

6 mins: Spurs pressing high when the visitors have the ball, with Richarlison really putting the pressure on Darlow. He shanks it long, and the hosts have possession.

Tottenham 0-0 Leeds

20:03 , Oli Gent

3 mins: Dan James is at right wing-back for the visitors, who field a 3-5-2 formation. Calvert-Lewin and Aaronson are the two frontmen, with the midfield trio of Stach, Tanaka and Ampadu.

Kick off!

20:01 , Oli Gent

1 min: We’re underway.

Sam Tabuteau reports

19:57 , Oli Gent

A round of "we are staying up" from the home fans. There is an air of confidence in here tonight that was definitely not there the last time Spurs played at home. Two away games, two wins and the momentum has switched. Spurs could take a massive step towards safety here.

Why Mayor of London wants Tottenham to be relegated

19:10 , Oli Gent

Londoners should be cheering on West Ham over Tottenham as taxpayers face a £2.5m bill if the club is relegated, Sir Sadiq Khan has said.

Sitting 18th in the Premier League table with just two games left, the Hammers are staring at relegation. Just one place above the drop zone in 17th, Spurs also remain in serious danger of falling into the Championship.

The Mayor of London blamed his predecessor Boris Johnson for doing “the worst deal imaginable”, which will mean if West Ham remain in the bottom three at the end of the season City Hall will be hit with a huge bill.

Head to head

18:07 , Oli Gent

Spurs have won their last five games in a row against Leeds, including a Kudus-inspired 2-1 victory at a wet Elland Road under Thomas Frank back in October.

Leeds’ last win in this fixture was back in May 2021. They have not registered an away win over Spurs for 25 years.

Tottenham wins: 42

Leeds wins: 33

Draws: 29

Standard Sport prediction

18:00 , Oli Gent

Spurs fans will hope a real corner has been turned at last thanks to the impact of De Zerbi, whose methods appear to be having a real effect on the squad in the short-term.

They seem to be playing with more belief, confidence and momentum at long last, showing so much more fight.

It would not be at all surprising to see them chalk up another vital win here, though Leeds are in strong form themselves and know how to grind out results.

While they have won only two away games in the league all season, eight of their 17 fixtures on the road have finished level, while Tottenham have only won two at home in the top-flight this term.

Draw, 1-1.

Leeds team news

A lengthy injury list includes Cristian Romero, Xavi Simons, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert and Ben Davies, while Richarlison did not train on Wednesday after a knock suffered against Villa.
