Tottenham vs Everton LIVE: Latest updates and reaction as Spurs win to secure Premier League survival

Tottenham vs Everton LIVE!

Tottenham are celebrating securing their Premier League survival at West Ham’s expense on a tense final day of the season. Spurs went into Sunday’s do-or-die home clash with Everton knowing that a point would be enough to avoid a disastrous relegation to the Championship, owing to a significant goal difference advantage over their rivals. Roberto De Zerbi’s side made a positive start to one of the biggest games in the club’s history, though could not find the crucial breakthrough until two minutes before half-time.

Joao Palhinha hit the post with an initial header before his follow-up effort crossed the line before being hacked away. It led to an outpouring of joy and relief around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with West Ham still being held in a must-win match at home to Leeds. The Hammers went on to win 3-0 thanks to second-half efforts from Taty Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson, but they did not get the helping hand they needed from Everton and former boss David Moyes.

Spurs successfully negotiated nine nervy minutes of stoppage time to ensure that they will not slip into the second tier of English football for the first time in almost 50 years. For West Ham, their 14-season stay in the Premier League is over as they go down with the highest points tally of any relegated team in the last 15 years.

Van de Ven: 'Embarrassing' that Spurs let relegation fight go to final day

19:46 , George Flood

Time for more Spurs player reaction now, with Micky van de Ven having been speaking to BBC’s Match of the Day.

“I think everyone was behind us today and we played with 12 men on the pitch,” he said.

“Everton were unbelievable, they kept pushing us and when we needed to defend but they kept pushing, I think they were a massive part of the win.

"I thought that [when West Ham scored their first goal] is when we needed to be switched on but I didn't tell this to everyone because obviously people will start stressing, but I made sure we stayed switched on and we did.

“It is unacceptable that the last game we played this season we play for relegation. This club has some unbelievable players.

“It was embarrassing to let it come to the final day but we did it and that is what is important.

“To be honest I was more emotional at the end of the final whistle, it has been a tough season for me personally as well.

“I played almost every game and I have suffered a lot, the emotions are really happy and we must not let it happen again.”

Spurs hero Palhinha hails 'amazing' feeling after scoring winner

19:17 , George Flood

Here’s Tottenham’s final-day hero Joao Palhinha talking to Sky Sports.

“It's an amazing feeling after a really tough season,” he said.

“A lot of things happened this season but we showed today what we can do.

“After a bad season like this one we showed up as a collective and had amazing support from the fans.

“The club will grow up with this season and we know what we have to do in the future.

“It's a big pleasure to play here with a top coach and top team-mates.

“We have to celebrate even if we didn't finish the position we deserve as Tottenham.

“It was just a goal. I just tried to help the team. I had a lot of emotions and wanted to dedicate it to my two sons and my parents.”

Tottenham fans stage protest after securing Premier League survival

They might have won on the final day to scrape Premier League survival, but there are still protests against Tottenham’s ownership taking place after the full-time whistle.

Another clear message organised by fan group Change for Tottenham.

Tottenham survive as West Ham relegated on final day

18:18 , George Flood

Utter jubilation and sheer relief in equal measure all around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Spurs escape what would have been a disastrous first relegation to the second tier of English football for almost 50 years.

It’s been an absolutely abject season, make no mistake about that, but at least it has ended with them preserving their top-flight status.

The decision to appoint Roberto De Zerbi has certainly paid off.

For fierce rivals West Ham, it’s an end to a 14-season stay in the Premier League.

Their 39 points is the most for a relegated team in 15 years.

They did all they could today in the end, but did not get the helping hand they needed from Everton.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

18:00 , George Flood

It’s full-time at the London Stadium, where Callum Wilson scored late for West Ham as they beat Leeds 3-0.

They’ve done all they can, now they need a massive late favour from Everton during what has been signalled as NINE minutes of stoppage time in north London.

West Ham are still 10 behind Spurs in terms of goal difference despite that emphatic second-half performance.

It means a draw would definitely be enough here for Tottenham to stay up.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

He wants a penalty, but ends up being booked for simulation instead.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

17:44 , George Flood

76 mins: Kolo Muani fires off target as Tottenham push to erase the lingering tension that will just have risen another notch with Jarrod Bowen doubling West Ham’s lead against Leeds.

Tottenham can draw and still be fine due to their superior goal difference.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

17:43 , George Flood

72 mins: On come Kolo Muani and Sarr for Spurs.

Off go Tel and Richarlison.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

17:37 , George Flood

68 mins: Pape Matar Sarr will also be on for Spurs shortly, along with Kolo Muani.

Everton are enjoying far more possession just at the moment, but are doing preciously little with it.

Still, De Zerbi will be eager to regain control, particularly with West Ham now leading against Leeds.

Mathys Tel looks set to come off, with Randal Kolo Muani ready to take his place.

Dropped from the team after a frustrating performance against Chelsea, this is a big opportunity for Kolo Muani.

Standard Sport’s Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

West Ham have taken the lead and all of a sudden Spurs' position does not seem quite as secure.

It is still all in their hands, but a goal for Everton now would raise the tension ten fold.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

17:34 , George Flood

65 mins: Tyrique George and Harrison Armstrong have both come on for Everton, replacing Rohl and the booked O’Brien.

Everton have still not had a shot on target in this game.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

17:33 , George Flood

Now then!

Things just got far more interesting in the relegation fight after Taty Castellanos headed home at the back post from a Jarrod Bowen corner to put West Ham in front against Leeds with 23 minutes to play.

A change in the atmosphere around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but no need to panic with this lead.

Even a draw would be enough remember if West Ham won, due to Spurs’ vastly superior goal difference.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

17:27 , George Flood

59 mins: A real lull to this second half before the hour mark, until Spurs suddenly ratchet up the tempo as Spence gets to the byline.

He’s eventually crowded out and Tel can’t find the space to get a clean shot off.

Changes are imminent from both De Zerbi and Moyes.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

17:23 , George Flood

56 mins: VAR were checking there to see if Garner may have needlessly kicked up at Palhinha during the follow-through to that tough but fair sliding challenge.

Spurs starting as they mean to go on in the second half.

They are chasing that all-important second goal with intent.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

17:19 , George Flood

50 mins: Spurs quickly earn a corner through Porro’s deflected cross, but it’s promptly cleared.

Van de Ven ‘s foul on Dewsbury-Hall then offers Everton a free-kick in a promising position, but they fail to trouble Kinsky, who has mostly been a spectator so far this afternoon.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

17:16 , George Flood

48 mins: Spence is baffled as he’s inexplicably denied an early second-half corner despite Mykolenko touching the ball behind right in front of the referee’s assistant.

Here come Spurs again and Pickford nervily spills a shot from Spence before shovelling it behind.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

17:14 , George Flood

After a frustrating delay lasting for four minutes, we are finally back under way at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Barring big discrepancies in terms of injury time, West Ham’s game will now finish well ahead of this one.

Spurs are 45 minutes away from securing Premier League survival against an Everton team who already look to be on the beach.

Can they finish the job?

Back under way at the London Stadium, where West Ham are still drawing 0-0 with Leeds.

But there’s a delay at Spurs while the officials fix a technical issue with their equipment.

The players are out on the pitch waiting to get back off and running.

No changes from either manager.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

17:08 , George Flood

Spurs fans haven’t had much to celebrate during this appalling season and nothing from this campaign will be looked back at fondly.

But the noise and sheer jubilation when that Palhinha goal went in was really quite something.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

Is this the goal that keeps Tottenham in the Premier League?

What a moment...

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

16:55 , George Flood

What a time for Tottenham to break the deadlock to significantly ease some of the mounting tension around the stadium, especially with lacklustre West Ham still drawing 0-0 at home to Leeds.

A huge step towards Premier League safety for Spurs.

They are not there yet of course and there’s still plenty of time to go, but that felt like a huge, huge goal.

The celebrations were wild, with Vicario jumping on De Zerbi, who tried his best to calm everyone down.

Romero was also in the thick of the celebrations down on the touchline.

The man for the big occasion. Joao Palhinha always scores when it matters and he might just have found the goal that keeps Tottenham in the Premier League.

His initial header comes off the post but the Portuguese midfielder is on hand to scramble the rebound over the line. Pandemonium here.

Tottenham 1-0 Everton

16:49 , George Flood

45 mins: Bentancur has to be far more careful as he gives a little push in the back to Tarkowski inside the box.

It’s checked by VAR, but not enough for a penalty.

Spurs don’t need anything stupid like that to set them back from here.

Into four minutes of added time at the end of this first half.

GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 Everton | Joao Palhinha 43'

16:45 , George Flood

43 mins: The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium erupts in joy as Spurs scramble their way into the lead just before the break.

Wild celebrations after Palhinha initially hits the post with a header, then his follow-up strike crosses the line before it’s hacked away.

The goal is given by Michael Oliver.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:43 , George Flood

42 mins: Porro delivers into the six-yard box, but it’s emphatically punched clear by Pickford.

Sounds like it’s just as nervy at the London Stadium, where it’s still goalless between West Ham and Leeds.

As it stands, Spurs would be staying up.

Dewsbury-Hall now in the wars for Everton.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:42 , George Flood

40 mins: A decent-looking effort from Tel is headed off course and Danso prepares another long throw from the far side.

The door is shut again by Everton, until Rohl gives away a needless free-kick with a little push on Gallagher wide on the left.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:40 , George Flood

37 mins: This is really frantic fare now with half-time looming as rushed counter-attacks are too easily thwarted at both ends.

Richarlison then goes in late on O’Brien and can perhaps count himself fortunate to avoid joining him in the book.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:38 , George Flood

34 mins: Spurs counter with menace as they try and inject some tempo back into their stalled display.

Iroegbunam does well defensively and the hosts wind up with a corner, though Danso’s free header clatters into Richarlison and is easily dealt with by Pickford.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:36 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Some momentum now for Everton. Spurs have been unable to make their dominance count and the atmosphere is becoming a little more nervy.

Plenty of nail biting and anxious glances in the home end.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:35 , George Flood

31 mins: We’ve ticked past the half-hour mark and it’s all getting very nervy now among the home fans.

Everton have gained a real foothold and Ndiaye is starting to pose a threat.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:29 , George Flood

26 mins: It’s been a very sluggish start by Everton, but they are enjoying their best little spell of the first half at the moment as a long throw into the box is headed away.

They quickly deliver another ball into the area, which again is seen off by a Spurs head.

Warm applause for James Maddison as he goes to warm up down the touchline.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:25 , George Flood

22 mins: Promising work down the right flank from Spurs and Spence’s dangerous low delivery is parried high and away by Pickford, with Richarlison lurking.

Spurs try to keep the attack alive but Everton hold firm, and now we will have the first drinks break of the game on this sweltering hot afternoon.

It’s around 30 degrees in north London at the moment, with these water breaks introduced by the Premier League today as a special measure amid the current UK heatwave.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:23 , George Flood

19 mins: Van de Ven comes across to make a challenge on Rohl but comes off worse as the German midfielder appears to step on the side of his ankle in the follow through.

The Spurs defender is down in pain and the bench are angry about that.

Van de Ven is back on his feet and it’s an Everton free-kick, which Garner delivers well but it’s flicked well wide off the head of Tarkowski.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:19 , George Flood

16 mins: Everton have a problem here with O’Brien up against Tel as he goes into the back of him again, stepping on the Frenchman’s ankle.

As Gary Neville points out on commentary on Sky Sports, Spurs should now be looking to target that match-up at every available opportunity.

Spurs look to break again quickly now down that side, but Tarkowski gets across to make the challenge.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:17 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Tottenham will want to stay up on their own terms and they are going about it the right way so far.

It has been all Spurs since kick-off, they just need to show a little more composure in the final third.

Gallagher, Danso and Palhinha have all snatched at efforts.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:16 , George Flood

13 mins: The subsequent free-kick into the box from Tottenham is flicked on but thrashed high and wide awkwardly of the back post by Palhinha.

These early Spurs chances are not falling to the right players...

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:15 , George Flood

11 mins: A couple of really wasteful early set-piece deliveries into the box from Everton, the latest gratefully gathered by Kinsky.

O’Brien now becomes the first player to pick up a yellow card this afternoon for an obvious foul on Tel out on Spurs’ left flank.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:12 , George Flood

9 mins: Spurs continue to sustain their early pressure and earn another corner.

Danso rises for the initial contact and then the ball falls fortunately back into his path.

However, the defender gets his snatched effort all wrong and it flies well wide.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:11 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Tottenham have started on the front foot.

Gallagher has been doing all the early running and strikes the first shot in anger.

Positive start from the hosts.

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:08 , George Flood

5 mins: Spurs are back in the ascendancy as Porro’s effort from range is blocked.

Everton fail to deal with a ball into the box, there’s a quick bit of head tennis and Gallagher ends up outfoxing Rohl before slamming into the side netting.

De Zerbi hops up and down in frustration on the sideline.

That was a chance...

Tottenham 0-0 Everton

16:06 , George Flood

3 mins: Everton’s early corner leads to nothing and a long ball pumped forward from the visitors then sails out of play and receives a smattering of ironic cheers from the home fans.

Gallagher loses the ball and Bentancur is there to get it back, with Spurs forcing a corner of their own.

Everton deal with the danger.

Tottenham vs Everton

Brilliant noise around the ground as the Spurs fans continue to do their bit on this massive final day.

The magnificent Tottenham Hotspur Stadium looks resplendent on this scorching hot afternoon.

The sold-out stands are a sea of white, with flags waving and pyrotechnic flames bursting.

Here come the players to a raucuous reception, Spurs led out by stand-in captain Micky van de Ven.

Ahead of kick-off in north London, here are more thoughts from Standard Sport’s Tottenham correspondent Sam Tabuteau...

T-minus 10 minutes

15:54 , George Flood

Less than 10 minutes to go now until kick-off in one of the biggest games in Tottenham’s history.

Time for those final predictions.

I have a feeling that Spurs may scrape a draw this afternoon and West Ham beat Leeds, but end up going down in agonising fashion on goal difference.

Almost time to find out...

Cristian Romero in attendance for Spurs relegation decider

15:36 , George Flood

Half an hour until kick-off at the baking hot Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where De Zerbi has already been out on the pitch trying to gee up the home fans ahead of such an important game.

An early goal would go a long, long way towards settling those nerves among the tense Spurs faithful.

And after so much speculation this week and a fierce backlash regarding reports that he would miss the game having returned to his native Argentina, Cristian Romero IS back in London and in attendance this afternoon.

You should hope so as the club captain, injury or not.

Not surprising to say that some wry smiles and pained expressions were exchanged.

Roberto De Zerbi has made a change to his team, and with good reason, as Djed Spence comes in for Randal Kolo Muani.

It has been a difficult season for Kolo Muani, who struggled against Chelsea in the week, while Spence is flying high after his England call-up.

It is hard to understate how big this afternoon is for Spurs.

What Spurs need to stay up.

14:10 , Alex Young

Relegation for Tottenham in unthinkable.

One of just seven Premier League ever-presents, alongside today’s visitors in Everton, it would be the most shocking relegation in decades.

Roberto De Zerbi has been at pains, since his appointment, at bigging up his players and underlining the need to focus on the here and now, rather than what’s come before and what may come after.

Spurs will know a point will likely be enough, as West Ham would then need a record-breaking win to stay up. But De Zerbi will be targeting victory.

West Ham simply have to win and hope Spurs lose.

Tottenham and West Ham aim to avoid catastrophic relegation in season finale shootout

14:03 , Alex Young

It is almost a year to the day since more than 150,000 Tottenham supporters descended on north London to celebrate the club’s Europa League triumph.

It was on that day that then-manager Ange Postecoglu confidently declared that “season three is always better than season two”. Amid pressure on his job he sought to offer stability and hope.

However, 17 days after lifting the club’s first trophy in 17 years, Postecoglou was sacked. The mess that has ensued since can scarcely be believed.

Spurs will fight for Premier League survival on the final day, knowing that should they fail to beat Everton at home then they will open the door for West Ham to leapfrog them to safety.

The odds are in Spurs’ favour. Only seven times in the Premier League’s 34-year history have a team starting the final day in the relegation zone stayed up.

But the final day has a propensity to throw up a surprise. Nerves have crippled Spurs this season, the weight of relegation - a fate Spurs have not befallen in nearly 50 years - has weighed heavy.

In the most competitive league in the world the only guarantee is that there are none.

Prediction

13:56 , Alex Young

It is do or die for Spurs. One final throw of the dice to avoid an embarrassing relegation from the top flight.

It is time for them to step up and live up to their ‘To dare is to do’ slogan, but beating Everton is no easy feat.

A draw would be enough to secure safety, but for piece of mind, a win should be all that the Spurs players are thinking about.

Draw, 1-1.

Early Everton team news

13:49 , Alex Young

As for Everton, they are without star loanee Jack Grealish, as well as first-choice centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite.

Idrissa Gueye could be back after missing the game against Sunderland with an undisclosed problem.

Early Tottenham team news

13:42 , Alex Young

Several key figures are all ruled out for Tottenham as De Zerbi endures the same injury fortunes that Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor did before him.

Xavi Simons, Cristian Romero, Wilson Odobert, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, and Ben Davies are all sidelined with long-term injuries.

The only hope he has of a fitness boost is Dominic Solanke, who could return from a hamstring injury. James Maddison will get more minutes, but not from the start.
