Tottenham vs Copenhagen LIVE: Champions League result, latest updates and reaction after massive win

LIVE: Tottenham vs Copenhagen - (AFP via Getty Images)

Tottenham vs Copenhagen LIVE

Tottenham marked their return to the Champions League stage with a comfortable win over FC Copenhagen on Tuesday night at the halfway stage of this season's League Phase. After scraping draws on the road against Bodo/Glimt and Monaco, Spurs remain unbeaten in the competition after following up their narrow win over Villarreal on matchday one to make it two wins from two at home.

Thomas Frank’s side put their struggles at home behind them as they scored four times to make light work of the Danish side. Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert, Micky van de Ven and Joao Palhinha were all on target to seal the biggest margin of victory in the Frank era as fans were treated to a wondergoal by Van de Ven and a much improved performance coming off the loss to Chelsea at the weekend.

The visitors, who began their European campaign with a credible draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen, are now without a point in three games. Follow Tottenham vs Copenhagen back below with Standard Sport's dedicated match blog, featuring expert analysis from Matt Verri at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium!

Claesson and Cornelius are on for Copenhagen while Richarlison, Spence, Danso have replaced Kolo Muani, Udogie and Romero.

Matt Verri at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

21:26 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Maybe Spurs have found the solution to their creativity problems. Give it to the centre-backs and just watch. Romero this time charges up the pitch and it's a sublime ball for Palhinha to finish. The stadium is bouncing now.

GOAL! Tottenham 4-0 Copenhagen | Cristian Romero ‘67

21:26 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

67 min: SPURS SCORE AGAIN!

Joao Palhinha off the bench to add a fourth for Spurs! Cristian Romero with the assist!

Matt Verri at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

21:24 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

What have we just seen! Van de Ven has just run basically the entire length of the pitch with the ball at full pace, nobody can get near him, and he then tucks away the finish. Absurd.

Vicario not quite so quick in charging up to join the celebrations.

GOAL! Tottenham 3-0 Copenhagen | Micky van de Ven ‘64

21:22 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

64 min: WHAT A GOAL!

Superb run and finish from Micky van de Ven. A goal of the season contender for sure!

Tottenham 2-0 Copenhagen

21:21 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

63 min: Suzuki is booked for a late tackle on Udogie. Moments earlier, Kolo Muani almost forced a third goal via sheer determination as he burst past a couple of Copenhagen defenders before Kotarski came out to smother the attempt.

Tottenham 2-0 Copenhagen

21:18 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

60 min: Xavi Simons is the Spurs player sacrificed as Thomas Frank brings on Palhinha to shore things up in midfield. Dutchman cuts a frustrated figure as he makes his way to the bench.

Matt Verri at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

21:17 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Feels a very harsh red card. Johnson's foot hit the ground first and then bounced up to make contact. Vicario has just done an excellent job faking injury to get some 'treatment' and allow Frank some time to decide how to reshuffle this formation.

Tottenham 2-0 Copenhagen

21:16 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

58 min: Now Vicario is struggling. Looks like he has pulled his hamstring. For, now he is going to stay on.

Tottenham 2-0 Copenhagen

21:14 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

56 min: The referee makes his way to the screen...

RED CARD! Johnson is sent-off, Spurs down to 10-men.

Tottenham 2-0 Copenhagen

21:13 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

55 min: Johnson is booked for a cynical foul. Very naughty from the Spurs winger and VAR are checking for a potential red card.

Tottenham 2-0 Copenhagen

21:12 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

54 min: Moukoko tries to halve the deficit with a curling effort but Vicario is equal to the effort and makes a comfortable save.

Matt Verri at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

21:11 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Stunning touch from Kolo Muani and then squared for Odobert - Spurs have their breathing room. Not quite sure what Kotarski thought he had three to five business days to clear that ball up the pitch. Copenhagen goalkeeper is punished.

GOAL! Tottenham 2-0 Copenhagen | Wilson Odobert ‘51

21:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

51 min: TOTTENHAM DOUBLE THEIR LEAD!

Unselfish play from Randal Kolo Muani as he charges down a clearance, plucks the ball out of the air with a fantastic first touch, squares for Wilson Odobert to tap home.

Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen

21:04 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

46 min: Almost the perfect start to the second half for Spurs as Odobert skins his full-back and looks to pick out Johnson in the middle, but excellent defending snuffs out the danger.

Johnson picks up a knock but is fine to continue.

KICK-OFF!

21:03 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Back underway in north London!

There has been a change at the break by the visitors...

OFF: Larsson

ON: Dadason

Tottenham vs Copenhagen live

21:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

On a brighter note, Xavi Simons has looked a lot better tonight.

Tottenham vs Copenhagen live

20:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Not a half Randal Kolo Muani will want to remember as he’s been shown a yellow card in addition to misses two massive chances to open his Tottenham account.

Matt Verri at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Simons could and probably should have had three assists in that half. As good as he's looked in a Tottenham shirt. You thought the slower pace of a Champions League match might suit him and so it's proving.

Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen

20:47 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45+1 min: Simons picks out Kolo Muani with a superb cross, but once again the Frenchman fails to score.

Simons should have three assists!

That is the last action of the half as Tottenham lead 1-0.

Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen

20:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45 min: Just the additional minute to be played at the end of the half.

Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen

20:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

44 min: Best bit of football from the visitors this half as they work the ball out to Achouri who ends up winning a corner.

From the set-piece, Vicario claims the ball with ease.

Matt Verri at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:42 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Has to be 2-0! The free-flowing football from Spurs that Frank regularly talks about, as Odobert flicks it through to Simons. He puts it on a plate for Kolo Muani... somehow wide from close range. Had to score.

Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen

20:41 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

40 min: It should be 2-0 Spurs as Xavi puts the ball on a plate for Kolo Muani following a slick move. Somehow, the Frenchman puts his effort wide. Incredible!

Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen

20:39 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

39 min: Achouri tries his luck from a long way out, but his attempt was never going to trouble Vicario. That will count as a shot on the stat sheet, but should it?

Kolo Muani is booked for pulling back Elyounoussi. Cynical foul.

Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen

20:37 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

37 min: Great play from Kolo Muani to unseat the Copenhagen central defenders. That allows the ball to drop for Xavi who tries to tee up Odobert but the pass is poor.

Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen

20:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

35 min: The game has entered a bit of a lull. Not a great deal in terms of chances at either end as we enter the final 10 minutes of the half.

Matt Verri at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:31 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Copenhagen having a slightly better spell, seeing more of the ball. Spurs looking fairly solid in their shape and untroubled, but would be a step forward to see them push for a second and really take control of this match.

Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen

20:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

30 min: A warning shot for Spurs as the ball breaks kindly for Moukoko in the area, he swivels and gets an attempt away but the effort lacks power and Vicario mops up.

Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen

20:28 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

28 min: Xavi Simons will feel a lot better after providing the assist for Brennan Johnson to break the deadlock. A sublime pass!

Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen

20:27 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

26 min: It’s looking rather ominous for Copenhagen as Udogie finds himself in acres of space on the left but he can’t pick out a team-mate in the middle. Spurs do earn a corner which is headed away before Johnson clips the ball into the middle only for Sarr to head over.

Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen

20:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

25 min: It’s a first Champions League goal for Brennan Johnson and the first time he’s scored since the Carabao Cup third-round win over Doncaster in September.

20:21 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Another shot on target... and a goal! Johnson is Spurs' best finisher and he does it again, keeping his cool to round the keeper and find the empty net. Nice for Simons to get the assist, great ball in behind.

GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 Copenhagen | Brennan Johnson ‘19

20:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

19 min: TOTTENHAM LEAD!

Xavi Simons gets his head up and picks out the run of Brennan Johnson and he rounds Dominik Kotarski and slots the ball into an empty net.

Matt Verri at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:18 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

A shot on target! Lovely move, too. Bentancur with the flick to set Spurs away and Udogie is again providing the threat out wide. His shot straight at the goalkeeper but good intent from Spurs.

Tottenham 0-0 Copenhagen

20:18 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

18 min: Tottenham pour forward once again as Xavi releases Udogie down the left. The full-back tries to catch Kotarski out at his near post, but the Copenhagen keeper mops up.

Tottenham 0-0 Copenhagen

20:16 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

16 min: Pedro Porro hits the free-kick really well, but can’t keep the ball underneath the crossbar.

Tottenham 0-0 Copenhagen

20:16 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

15 min: Copenhagen defender Gabriel Pereira is booked for his challenge on Kolo Muani. He has to be careful now.

Tottenham 0-0 Copenhagen

20:14 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

14 min: Copenhagen are back in the capital a few months on from losing to Chelsea in a Conference League round of 16 tie last season.

Tottenham 0-0 Copenhagen

20:12 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

12 min: Copenhagen attempt a rare attack but Spurs win the ball back high up and look to probe before squandering possession rather cheaply.

Tottenham 0-0 Copenhagen

20:09 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

9 min: Another decent opening for Spurs but Johnson can’t bring the ball under control.

Matt Verri at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:08 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

It's already much better from Spurs, even if that is from the lowest bar possible. Simons central, Udogie flying forward on the left and Kolo Muani offering a threat in behind. Balance is improved from the Chelsea match for sure.

Tottenham 0-0 Copenhagen

20:08 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

7 min: Xavi Simons finds himself in space and takes on the shot which is deflected behind for a corner. Good play from Udogie to create that opening.

Tottenham 0-0 Copenhagen

20:06 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

6 min: The Copenhagen supporters are making their voices heard in the away end. They almost have a reason to celebrate but Larsson’s deflected effort is straight at Vicario.

Tottenham 0-0 Copenhagen

20:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

5 min: It’s all Tottenham in terms of possession so far, Copenhagen defending in a 4-4-2 shape and happy to get everyone behind the ball as they look to successfully negotiate the early stages.

Tottenham 0-0 Copenhagen

20:02 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

2 min: Positive start from Tottenham as Udogie and Odobert combine to win a corner. Ball is whipped in by Pedro Porro and Sarr is in acres of space at the back post.

However, the Spurs midfielder can’t make the most of the chance.

KICK-OFF!

Can Spurs turn in a much improved performance and take all three points?

Atmosphere is pretty decent ahead of kick-off, considering the general mood of things. Copenhagen fans playing their part - away end is packed out.

As it stands

Tottenham will begin the game in 15th place, while Copenhagen are in the elimination zone after three games.

Victory for either will certainly boost hopes of finishing inside the top 24.

Vicario protects Bergvall from 'bad' fan

19:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Guglielmo Vicario explained he felt the need to "protect" Lucas Bergvall from an abusive fan after Tottenham's defeat to Chelsea.

Bergvall started the match but was forced off in the opening minutes with a concussion after a ball was hit into the side of his head from close range.

The 19-year-old pleaded with the medical staff to let him continue and tried to push the club doctor aside on the touchline, but the decision was made for him to come off. Bergvall will miss Spurs' next two matches.

He came back on the pitch after the game to applaud the fans and appeared to react to something that was shouted at him from the stands.

Vicario quickly ushered Bergvall away and then glared in that direction, gesturing at some of the supporters as he slowly made his way back to the tunnel.

Xavi Simons gets final chance to find form ahead of brutal run

19:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Thomas Frank could really do with Xavi Simons showing why the club spent £52million on him in the summer, writes Matt Verri.

In his dozen appearances for Spurs to date, Simons is yet to score and his sole assist came from a corner he took on debut.

There was a bright cameo against Brighton and a better showing in a defeat to Newcastle, but those glimpses are not enough for a player of Simons' ability.

In his defence there are some mitigating circumstances. Simons is adjusting to life in a new country and has been thrown into a team with struggles well beyond just his own.

Mohammed Kudus has been central to what Spurs have done in attack this season but he's not in the squad tonight.

Joao Palhinha gets a bit of a rest, named on what is a very thin looking bench. Thomas Frank needs his starters to get the job done.

Jamie Carragher singles out Tottenham star

18:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Jamie Carragher slammed Tottenham midfielders Xavi Simons and Joao Palhinha as having neither the quality nor the confidence for the Premier League after their derby defeat to Chelsea.

Spurs were well off the pace as they were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea and were booed off after mustering just one shot on target.

The Blues were far from perfect, but a swashbuckling midfield performance from Moises Caicedo and a commanding showing from Robert Sanchez ensured they would not rue their wasteful finishing.

Carragher, though, singled out Simons and Palhinha for their negative play.

Frank reveals Spence and Van de Ven talks after Chelsea snub

18:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Thomas Frank has revealed Djed Spence and Micky van de Ven have apologised for snubbing him after Tottenham lost to Chelsea.

Spence and Van de Ven ignored Frank as they left the pitch following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As Spurs were being booed off at home, Frank encouraged his team to do a lap of appreciation around the stadium.

But Spence and stand-in captain Van de Ven walked straight past the Spurs head coach and down the tunnel.

Frank has revealed Spence and Van de Ven came “unprompted” to his office on Sunday for clear-the-air talks and to “say sorry for the situation”.

FULL STORY!

(Standard Sport)

Predicted Tottenham XI

18:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Thomas Frank does have Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero back after they came off the bench against Chelsea and both could return to the starting lineup here.

The midfield options are becoming increasingly thin, with Archie Gray still out with a calf issue and Bergvall now unavailable.

Frank has repeatedly turned to the midfield partnership of Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur, but Palhinha has played 90 minutes in all five of Spurs' matches since the international break and could be rested.

Predicted Tottenham XI (4-2-3-1): Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Sarr; Kudus, Simons, Odobert; Richarlison.

Scrutiny builds on Thomas Frank after Chelsea defeat

18:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

As the full-time whistle went and the boos rang out around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the words of Dejan Kulusevski sprang to mind, writes Matt Verri.

In a letter to the Tottenham fans written for The Players Tribune last year, he reflected on nine-man Spurs' 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in Ange Postecoglou's first season in charge, when they persisted with a line so high it was nearly back to Seven Sisters.

Kulusevski recalled: “You didn’t boo us. You didn’t whistle us. You applauded us. You understood what it meant. Yes, we had lost a game. But we won in life.”

Two seasons on, Spurs lost another game but this time drained the life from their fans. A 1-0 defeat to Chelsea was far more than their performance deserved on a wretched night.

Tottenham vs Copenhagen prediction

Tottenham have little to worry about in defence, especially with the return of Cristian Romero, but simply must start giving opposition back lines something to think about.

On paper, the visit of the relative European minnows could prove a welcome tonic as they average two goals conceded per game, and shipped four at home to Borussia Dortmund last time out. Spurs can have little excuses and should need few come full-time.
