Tottenham vs Aston Villa
Premier League 2019/20 season
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Kick-off time: 5:30pm BST, today
Tottenham start the season at home for the first time in almost a decade today as Aston Villa come to town looking for a big-name scalp.
Spurs face a difficult trip to champions Manchester City on the second weekend of the season and will therefore be eager to get off to a good start at their £1billion stadium against Dean Smith's newly-promoted team.
Aston Villa have made 12 new signings, spending over £100m in the process, while Mauricio Pochettino has added Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon to his squad.
Tottenham vs Aston Villa team news and predicted lineups
Heung-min Son and Juan Foyth, though injured, are suspended for the first two games of the season, while Dele Alli is out until September with a thigh injury.
Ben Davies is still some weeks away from a return after undergoing surgery on a groin complaint, but Serge Aurier, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama are all back in training.
Villa have small concerns over Jed Steer (calf), Anwar El Ghazi (knock) and Ezri Konsa (thigh) but all three should make the matchday squad.
James Chester is absent with a hamstring issue, however.
Tottenham XI: Lloris; Walker-Peters, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose; Sissoko, Ndombele; Winks, Lucas, Eriksen; Kane
Aston Villa XI: Heaton; Guilbert, Mings, Engels, Targett; Hourihane, McGinn, Grealish; Jota, El Ghazi, Wesley
Prediction: Tottenham 2-0 Aston Villa
Spurs should have enough to see off Aston Villa. Harry Kane has looked very sharp during pre-season and will be keen to end his August hoodoo.
Villa have looked good themselves in the lead up to the big kick-off with a 100 per cent record in close-season games, but wholesale changes to the squad will need time to settle.
