Tottenham’s dismal home record in 2025 was dealt another blow as Aston Villa came from behind to win in north London.
Emiliano Buendia’s curling winner secured victory as Unai Emery’s side climbed in to the top half of the Premier League table. Villa had fallen behind inside five minutes after Rodrigo Bentancur capitalised on a loose ball in the box, but a stunning finish from Morgan Rogers provided an equaliser before half-time, allowing Buendia to produce a fine winner late on.
Spurs have won just three times in the league at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in this calendar year, with Thomas Frank so far unable to arrest a trend that developed under predecessor Ange Postecoglou. Defeat here, which saw the club fail to move up to second behind rivals and table-toppers Arsenal, was perhaps even more damaging given the late withdrawal of injured captain Cristian Romero, who had been named in the starting side before pulling up in the warm-up.

Tottenham’s home woes continue as Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia fire Aston Villa to victory
16:27 , Harry Latham-CoyleMorgan Rogers' first goal for Aston Villa in 20 matches inspired a fifth-consecutive win and piled more home woe on Tottenham as they suffered a 2-1 Premier League defeat.
Rogers had shone for England during the international break, but failed to score in club football since the start of April, but changed that at Spurs with a sensational 37th-minute leveller.
It cancelled out Rodrigo Bentancur's fifth-minute opener for Thomas Frank's side and as Tottenham pushed for a rare home victory in the league in 2025, they were hit with a sucker-punch as Emiliano Buendia's curler, 13 minutes from time sealed the comeback for Villa.

FULL-TIME! Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa
16:10 , Chris WilsonSpurs have missed the chance to go second today, instead staying in sixth with 14 points from their opening eight games. That puts them five points behind leaders Arsenal.
Villa move into 10th with 12 points, and they’re now unbeaten in the league since late August.

Spurs are creating some openings as the final whistle looms but once again it’s a mistake as Sarr strays offside moments after Villa just about managed to deal with a dangerous Johnson cross.
Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa
15:58 , Chris Wilson90 +5 mins
More good work from Kudus as his cross is headed away but only to the feet of Brennan Johnson, who takes the touch before rifling the half-volley well over.

Kolo Muani! The Frenchman has the chance to make the headlines as Richarlison heads down a cross towards him, but he takes a swing and fails to make contact from inside the box!
Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa

We’re into the first of seven added minutes here, though still it is Villa who look more likely to score. They’re in control at the moment.
Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa
15:53 , Chris Wilson90 mins
Another chance for Villa as Maatsen takes it away from Sarr in midfield. They're 2-v-2 with Spurs having put too many men forward, and the defender finds Watkins with a good through ball.
He’s 1-v-1 with van de Ven and the Dutchman does brilliantly to get the block in, though McGinn is furious that his teammate didn’t find his overlapping run.
Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa
15:51 , Chris Wilson89 mins
Villa have half a chance now as Watkins dispossesses Palhinha before shipping the ball on. It comes back to him in the box and he tries to find a teammate with the cross, but the visitors are penalised for a foul.
Spurs come again and there’ll be another long throw opportunity for Danso - it’s cleared easily though.
Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa

A Villa corner breaks nicely for Porro on the counter and he tries to play Kolo Muani in, but he completely messes up the through ball.
Bentancur and Spence have made way for Brennan Johnson and Pape Sarr for the hosts.

Porro finds Bergvall on the overlap but the Sweden midfielder had strayed offside. The hosts are beginning to lose their way and Thomas Frank is preparing more subs as we speak.
Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa

Very stop-start at the moment as Porro goes down moments after Onana did.
Spurs are struggling to find any rhythm as they look for an equaliser.

And now subs for Villa too as Digne and Onana come off for Ian Maatsen and Ross Barkley.

Some Spurs subs to follow the goal as Simons and Odobert make way for Lucas Bergvall and Randal Kolo Muani, who makes his Premier League debut.
GOAL! Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa
15:42 , Chris Wilson77 mins
GOAL! Just as the game was crying out for quality, it gets three moments in just a few seconds and Villa are ahead!
The cross is cleared to Cash who fizzes a great pass forward on the half-volley to Digne, who brings it down out of the air brilliantly before flicking it to Buendia.
The Villa sub drives towards goal before opening his body up and curling an effort into the far corner! It might have had a bit of help from a deflection but it was a great effort.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

Kudus has been one of the game’s bright lights but he loses possession in the Villa box before Watkins does the exact same at the other end. Those actions are indicative of the overall attacking play so far.
Villa do win a corner though as Cash gets forward and sees his cross diverted behind.
Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
15:36 , Chris Wilson73 mins
Too many final balls are ending up nowhere near their intended targets at the moment, with the ‘keepers easily sweeping up plenty. There is very little atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the moment.
Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
15:35 , Chris Wilson71 mins
A Villa corner comes to nothing before Cash delivers a poor cross from the other side to effectively end the visitors’ attack. Sums up the second half so far.
Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
15:32 , Chris Wilson68 mins
It’s become a very slow game at the moment, which is suiting Villa for now. Neither side is managing to keep possession for a sustained period.
Elsewhere, Danso has gone into the book for a foul on Digne.
Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
15:29 , Chris Wilson65 mins
Better from Spurs as Kudus beats his man on the outside before seeing his cross cleared. It’s another chance for a Danso long throw.
It causes more pinball in the box but it ends with Martinez getting off lightly after he failed to win the ball.
Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
15:23 , Chris Wilson61 mins
A first change for Spurs as Tel makes way for Richarlison.
Emery is making subs too, as Guessand and Males make way for Emi Buendia and Ollie Watkins.
Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
15:20 , Chris Wilson59 mins
Another opening for Spurs but it ends with Palhinha driving well wide after a decent spell of play from Odobert.
At the other end, the flag goes up against Rogers, and it’s becoming pretty end-to-end over the last few minutes as Spurs prepare a change.
Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
15:19 , Chris Wilson56 mins
Spurs are playing with plenty of intensity here and they’re really pinning Villa back, though a little spell of possession for the visitors has eased the pressure somewhat.
They actually create a chance of their own as McGinn threads a ball to Malen in a central area, but the Dutchman’s effort finds the side-netting.
Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
15:17 , Chris Wilson53 mins
Quite a lengthy treatment period for the Frenchman but he’s okay to carry on.
Play resumes and Danso has the chance to deliver the long throw, and it creates a chance for the hosts!
Onana heads it on and Villa can't clear it. It breaks to Odobert and he fires a shot that Konsa blocks well. It hit his hand but they were at his chest, so never a penalty.
Moments later, Spurs come again and Palhinha hits an effort from outside the area that Martinez tips around the post.
Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
15:11 , Chris Wilson49 mins
Spurs have started on the front foot but Simons is the latest to ruin an attack with a cheap foul.
Moments later, Danso catches Digne on the follow through in the box and the Frenchman is down receiving treatment. Never a penalty though.
KICK-OFF! Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
15:07 , Chris WilsonBack underway in the capital! No changes for either side, though Ollie Watkins spent much of the break warming up, so we can expect to see him soon.
HALF-TIME! Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
15:02 , Chris WilsonNot a great game for the neutral then, though that moment of brilliance from Rogers was absolutely superb.
Overall, both sides have been guilty of making silly mistakes and lacking quality in key positions, though they have enough players with enough quality to change the game when others aren’t performing, and that is how both goals came about.
You’s imagine both managers will be pretty irritated with what they’ve seen so far.

HALF-TIME! Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

Into the final minute of the half and Spence does well to get into the box on the overlap but Onana does equally well to slide in and put the cross out for a corner.
Final action of the half sees a Tottenham corner cleared and that is that! Both sides enter the break level.

The free-kick routine ends with Odobert swinging in a good cross and van de Ven heading over.
Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
14:46 , Chris Wilson44 mins
Both teams still exchanging possession plenty of times as the half comes to an end. Rogers and Kudus the only real moments of quality, but moments like that lead to goals at this level! Not a great game for the neutral though.
We’ll have five minutes of added time as Spurs win a free-kick from a good crossing area after McGinn brings down Porro.
Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
14:43 , Chris Wilson40 mins
A free-kick in a dangerous area for Spurs now and it almost ends in a goal! It's spread wide to Kudus and he curls in another lovely cross, but Tel can’t convert at the far post.
Meanwhile, Rogers briefly had to come off due to injury but he’s back on.
GOAL! Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa
14:39 , Chris Wilson37 mins
GOAL! What a hit this is from Rogers!
Villa had struggled to break the hosts down but this is just superb talent.
Rogers initially tries to slip in a through ball but it comes back to him and he shifts the ball past Simons to create some space before firing in a beautiful effort that rises and dips past Vicario into the far corner!

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa
14:36 , Chris Wilson35 mins
Onana looks okay to carry on as play resumes. The Belgian starts a promising Villa move as he spreads it wide before Digne sees his cross punched away well by Vicario.
Spurs counter and Simons slips it through to Odobert on the wing, but he can’t make anything of it and is dispossessed by Onana in the box.
Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa
14:33 , Chris Wilson32 mins
A break in play now as Onana is down and receiving treatment after a heavy challenge from Palhinha.
Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa
14:32 , Chris Wilson30 mins
No real chances of note since that disallowed Kudus goal, with both sides guilty of ruining a couple of promising openings.
It’s been a game characterised by mistakes and a lack of quality so far, barring that one cross from the Ghanaian.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa
14:28 , Chris Wilson27 mins
Risky from Martinez as he opts not to come for the corner and it comes to Odobert at the back post, but he can’t get clean contact under pressure from the defender.
Spurs come again and it’s spread wide to Odobert, who cuts back inside and hits a shot that Martinez originally spills before the visitors deal with the loose ball.
Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa
14:24 , Chris Wilson24 mins
A brief VAR check for a challenge on Odobert on the edge of the box, but there was nothing in it.
At the other end, van de Ven shows great pace to prevent Guessand latching onto the through ball.
Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa
14:22 , Chris Wilson22 mins
Porro finds Kudus on the overlap and he manages to win a corner, but Martinez catches it easily enough.
He launches a counter that ends with van de Ven flying in late on Rogers, and the Spurs captain is the first player to be booked.
Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa
14:18 , Chris Wilson18 mins
Vila have begun to dominate the ball over the last five minutes or so but they haven’t created anything of note.
At the same time, Spurs are looking to get in behind the visitors’ high line, with Tel the latest to slightly mistime his run.
Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa
14:16 , Chris Wilson15 mins
Half a chance for Matty Cash as Onana manages to slip the ball to him on the edge of the box, but he drags it well wide.
Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa
14:13 , Chris Wilson12 mins
The corner is cleared before Cash’s dangerous ball in is put behind, but nothing comes from the second set-piece.
Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa
14:11 , Chris Wilson10 mins
Work to do for Villa already then. Spurs look very settled after the opener, and they’re already happy to ket Villa have the ball in certain positions.
They’re guilty of being too casual at the back this time though, and they concede their first corner of the game after some sloppy play from goalscorer Bentancur.
DISALLOWED GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa
14:08 , Chris Wilson7 mins
Spurs briefly think they have the perfect start but the flag goes up.
Kudus latches onto a long ball forward and beats the Villa high line before taking on Digne and blasting a low finish through Martinez, but he went far too early and was offside.
GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa
14:07 , Chris Wilson5 mins
GOAL! The hosts are ahead!
This is all about a brilliant delivery from Kudus.
The ball comes to the Ghanaian after the corner is cleared and he looks up and delivers a perfect ball towards tieback post.
It’s headed back across goal and arrives at the feet of Rodrigo Bentancur, who rifles in a low shot that flies in with some help from a little deflection.

Tottenham 0-0 Aston Villa

First corner of the day goes to Spurs as their high press sees Tel win the ball in the Villa box after the visitors tried to play out from the back too casually.

A brief break as the ref needs to fix his earpiece early on. Both sides have lost possession cheaply a couple of times early on.
KICK-OFF! Tottenham 0-0 Aston Villa
14:00 , Chris WilsonUnderway in north London! It should be an interesting match between two teams who should be contending for Europe this season.

Late injury blow for Tottenham!
13:53 , Harry Latham-CoyleOh dear - a late, major injury blow for Tottenham with Cristian Romero withdrawing in the warm-up! Kevin Danso steps in to the starting side, with centre-half partner Micky van de Ven now captain.
Match stats
13:50 , Chris WilsonTottenham Hotspur have won just three of their last 17 Premier League home games (D4 L10). Indeed, since the first game of this run (Nov 10th 2024 v Ipswich), no ever-present side has lost more home games (10) or picked up fewer home points (13) in the competition than Spurs.
After failing to win each of their opening five league games this season (D3 L2), Aston Villa have since won their last two. Indeed, since the beginning of March, only Manchester City have enjoyed more Premier League wins (11) than Unai Emery’s side (10).
Frank: Villa 'very good in the build up'
13:45 , Chris Wilson"We all have an idea in our heads what the strongest team is with everyone available but I have to create the strongest team with what players are available now,” said Thomas Frank regarding injuries in his side.
“I see a lot of the same things from the last few seasons. They are very good in the build up with fantastic players,” he said about Villa.
“Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Donyell Malen... it is a top team. They are growing. In an unbelievably tight game on Sunday, I hope and believe we can (get the win) in what will be a tough game,” he added.
Match stats
13:40 , Chris WilsonNone of the last 20 Premier League matches between Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa have been drawn (14 Spurs wins, 6 Villa wins) since a 1-1 stalemate in May 2012. Only two fixtures in the competition’s history have ever had more successive games without a draw.
Villa have won four of their last six Premier League games against Tottenham Hotspur (L2), as many as their previous 29 beforehand (D7 L18).
Head-to-head
13:30 , Chris WilsonThese two sides have met 157 times in the past, with Spurs winning 70, Villa winning 55 and 32 ending as draws.
They met three times last season, with Villa winning the home league match and an FA Cup tie, though Spurs won this fixture 4-1 last term.
Aston Villa target top half
13:20 , Harry Latham-CoyleAston Villa, for what it is worth, can climb in to the top half today with a win, with Everton’s defeat yesterday leaving them within reach in 10th. Manchester United play later, of course, and begin the day a point and two places ahead of Villa.
It was a tricky start to the season for Unai Emery’s side, but there were signs before the international break that they were starting to find some fluency and form.

Unai Emery ready for 'huge challenge' at Tottenham
12:30 , Harry Latham-CoyleBack to today, then, and Unai Emery is preparing for a "huge challenge" as his Aston Villa side travel to Tottenham.
Villa started slowly, failing to win any of their first five Premier League games, but went into the October international break having won two in a row in the league and four in all competitions.
They now take on a Spurs side who have only lost once in 10 matches in all competitions since the start of the Premier League season, and Spanish head coach Emery believes it will be a test of his side's progress.
"Tottenham is one of the contender teams to be in the top seven," he said at a press conference on Friday.
"Last year they didn't achieve it, but of course this year they are really playing fantastic, getting good results, they are now in the top with 14 points, and playing at home, they are feeling strong.
"For us, it's really a huge challenge, how we can face them, showing our capacity and how we are playing against them as a team, individually how we are responding - this is my challenge."
Emery is expecting to have Ollie Watkins, Emi Buendia and Jadon Sancho available after knocks, while Tyrone Mings is also a contender for the squad depending on how he trained on Saturday.

Thomas Frank wants Spurs fans to play part in turning stadium into a fortress
11:30 , Harry Latham-CoyleThomas Frank wants to make Tottenham Hotspur Stadium a fortress but knows it will take “unbelievable cohesion” with the fans to achieve.
Spurs host Aston Villa eager to arrest their woeful home form in the Premier League, with only three top-flight wins in 2025.
The majority of a dismal run of three home wins in 17 league games came under Frank’s predecessor Ange Postecoglou, who struggled with an injury crisis at the start of the year before he prioritised Europa League success over domestic matters.
However, Frank’s short tenure has produced mixed results at the club’s 62,850-seater stadium, with boos audible after a defeat to Bournemouth in August and following a frustrating 1-1 draw with Wolves last month.
