Tottenham vs Aston Villa LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction as Spurs well beaten

Tottenham vs Aston Villa LIVE!

Aston Villa came from behind to sink Tottenham on Sunday despite the hosts making a perfect start to the occasion. Rodrigo Bentancur fired home from close range with just five minutes played to capitalise on a spell of early pressure, leaving Spurs in the driver’s seat from the off.

They failed to capitalise on that fast start, though. Morgan Rogers fired home from the edge of the box shortly before half-time to equalise, confounding Guglielmo Vicario with a dipping shot, before Emiliano Buendia lashed a second-half winner into the bottom corner to finish off a sweet team move. Unai Emery will be thrilled with the comeback, but Thomas Frank will be left with some tricky questions to answer, particularly after Cristian Romero was dropped from the starting XI having sustained an injury in warm-ups.

Much was made of Randal Kolo Muani’s return to the matchday squad, too, but he struggled after entering the fray late on. A chance for a winner fell to him in the box, but he missed his chance to mark his Premier League debut with a goal, swinging and missing rather spectacularly. Catch up with all the action as it happened below with our dedicated match blog, complete with expert insight and analysis from Matt Verri at the ground!

86mins: John McGinn takes the ball to the corner flag, and does well to play it out off Bergvall to win a set-piece.

Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa

15:44 , Arthur Ferridge

82mins: Spurs look frustrated here. Bergvall catches Onana late, and the Belgian seemed to be in a bit of pain, but he hops back to his feet pretty quickly.

He is then replaced by Ross Barkley, and Digne by Maatsen.

Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa

15:43 , Arthur Ferridge

81mins: Kolo Muani announces himself to the Premier League by clattering into his marker as he looks to reach a header he didn’t have much hope of making contact with.

Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa

15:41 , Arthur Ferridge

80mins: Well, it’ll be a baptism of fire for Kolo Muani then. He is chucked on with ten to play and Spurs trailing.

Matt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

15:41 , Arthur Ferridge

What. A. Goal. Stunning from Cash, Digne and Buendia. Bergvall and Kolo Muani have been waiting five minutes to come on - they're doing so now with Spurs behind.

GOAL! Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa | Buendia '77

15:39 , Arthur Ferridge

SUCKERPUNCH! Buendia lashes one across goal into the bottom left corner, and Villa have the lead from nothing! Vicario was rooted.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:38 , Arthur Ferridge

76mins: Corner for Villa, much to the delight of the away support...

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:37 , Arthur Ferridge

75mins: Kudus tries some tricks on the right flank but loses the ball before he can do anything productive with it. Villa counter through Watkins, and he is held up by Spence.

Matt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

15:35 , Arthur Ferridge

Here we go. A Premier League debut for Kolo Muani is imminent, not far off two months after he arrived at the club. Now would be a pretty good time to make up for lost time.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:35 , Arthur Ferridge

72mins: Bergvall and Kolo Muani are being readied to come on now. Frank throwing everything at this.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:33 , Arthur Ferridge

72mins: A Villa corner is beaten away by Odobert.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:32 , Arthur Ferridge

70mins: 20 minutes remain and this could genuinely go either way. Very difficult to call at the moment.

MAtt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

15:31 , Arthur Ferridge

Big ice pack on Tel's left leg sitting on the bench. Winter is arriving and the injury scares are picking up, a tale as old as time.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:24 , Arthur Ferridge

62mins: McGinn has a wild shot from about 25 yards and it won’t have worried Vicario.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:23 , Arthur Ferridge

60mins: Watkins and Buendia replace Guessand and Malen.

Been an underwhelming performance from Guessand - have hardly noticed him.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:22 , Arthur Ferridge

60mins: Richarlison replaces Tel.

Matt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

15:19 , Arthur Ferridge

A classic of the 'thought it was in' genre. Malen lashes it into the side-netting and the Villa fans are up and celebrating on the far side. At the other end, Simons should get a shot away but lays it off instead - not playing with a huge amount of confidence on the ball.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:19 , Arthur Ferridge

57mins: Richarlison is being readied to come on as Palhinha drags a long-range shot well wide.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:18 , Arthur Ferridge

57mins: Malen nearly nicks one against the run of play - ruffles the side netting under pressure from Van de Ven.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:17 , Arthur Ferridge

56mins: Another wonderful save from Martinez! A great cross and Bentancur looks to head home for his second, but Martinez does superbly to get a foot to it. He was offside anyway, so non-issue, but cracking effort regardless from the keeper.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:16 , Arthur Ferridge

55mins: Villa are really under the cosh now. Martinez does well to deny Palhinha’s long-range strike.

Matt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

15:16 , Arthur Ferridge

That's what we're all here for. Danso with his first long throw of the afternoon and it's absolute chaos in the box. Onana with a flick, Cash with a hack, Odobert's shot charged down.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:15 , Arthur Ferridge

53mins: How on Earth has that stayed out?! A long throw falls to Odobert, who shoots into Konsa - and there are appeals for handball. Hooper is having none of it.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:13 , Arthur Ferridge

52mins: Good news, dear reader, Lucas Digne is back on his feet and has returned to the fray.

Matt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

15:13 , Arthur Ferridge

Long break here and that looked really nasty for Digne. Danso cleared the ball away and caught the left-back in his follow-through. Digne hasn't moved much on the ground... until the referee appears and suddenly he's sat up arguing away with everyone he can see.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:12 , Arthur Ferridge

51mins: Digne continues to receive treatment. Doesn’t look good for the Frenchman at all.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:11 , Arthur Ferridge

50mins: You have seen those given. Danso followed through on his clearance and caught Digne with his studs, but VAR has already dismissed it.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:11 , Arthur Ferridge

49mins: Danso puts in an uncompromising tackle on Digne in the Spurs box. Doesn’t seem to be a foul, but the Frenchman looks to be in a bit of pain.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:09 , Arthur Ferridge

48mins: Simons takes Kamara down to end the latest Spurs attack.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:09 , Arthur Ferridge

47mins: A lively start to this second half as Spurs look to add another quick goal as they did in the first half. No dice, just yet, as Kudus gets on the ball in the corner and is forced to recycle via the backline.

2ND HALF: Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

15:06 , Arthur Ferridge

Back underway in N17! No changes for either side.

HALF TIME: Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

14:51 , Arthur Ferridge

You’ll be shocked to learn the corner comes to nothing and the half-time whistle blows.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

14:50 , Arthur Ferridge

45+5mins: The half will end with one last Spurs corner. They’ve been pretty toothless so far.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

14:49 , Arthur Ferridge

45+4mins: Replays show Porro’s cross was not in any danger of hitting Torres’ hand.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

14:48 , Arthur Ferridge

45+3mins: Porro appeals for handball after his cross is blocked by Torres, but his complaints are swiftly dismissed.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

14:47 , Arthur Ferridge

45+2mins: The ball falls to Simons on the edge of the box and he opts to pass despite having plenty of space to shoot. Tells you a bit about where his head is at, confidence-wise.

He did still create space for a cross, though, which Van de Ven headed over.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

14:46 , Arthur Ferridge

45+1mins: McGinn and Porro collide, and the Spurs man definitely came off worse. The Scot gets off scot-free, though.

Five added minutes.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

14:44 , Arthur Ferridge

44mins: The camera cuts to a waterlogged Unai Emery, who looks less than impressed with what he’s seeing on the pitch.

Matt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

14:44 , Arthur Ferridge

This set-piece work from Spurs really is something special. Now bringing the referee into their routines - Porro passing it off him and into Kudus' path. Big miss from Tel at the back post.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

14:42 , Arthur Ferridge

42mins: Bizarre set-piece from Spurs. Porro takes a free-kick from some 35 yards and fires it straight into the referee Hooper. Spurs play on and go close to scoring through Tel and Villa are unimpressed.

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

14:41 , Arthur Ferridge

41mins: Both captains get a talking to from the ref after Kudus sticks a tackle of retribution on Rogers. Not a huge amount in it, really, but he immediately called for the trainers. Walking off, though, so figure he’s not too bad off

Matt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

14:39 , Arthur Ferridge

Some strike from Rogers. Maybe a question for Vicario to answer - it wasn't even vaguely near the corner. But it was so well hit and dipped under the bar that you probably just have to give credit to Rogers.

GOAL! Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa | Rogers '38

14:38 , Arthur Ferridge

From nowhere, Villa are level! Rogers gets on the ball at the edge of the box and has a go. Vicario had no hope.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:36 , Arthur Ferridge

37mins: Villa are yet to have a shot on target.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:36 , Arthur Ferridge

35mins: Odobert looks to skip into the box and gets the better of Cash, but he runs into an Amadou Onana-shaped brick wall.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:35 , Arthur Ferridge

35mins: A nice Villa move has Rogers in the box, but Simons is there to pick his pocket. The CLaret contingent come back, but Vicario intercepts Digne’s cross. Better from the visitors.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:33 , Arthur Ferridge

33mins: Back underway.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:32 , Arthur Ferridge

32mins: Palhinha wins the ball in midfield and sets Tel racing goalwards, but he slips in the box and the attack loses its edge. Onana is down injured behind the ball, though, and we will take a brief break as he is treated.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:30 , Arthur Ferridge

29mins: Cash comes together with Palhinha and is down injured. The Spurs support offer a comforting ‘boo’ as he gets back to his feet.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:28 , Arthur Ferridge

28mins: Superb from Danso. Malen is played in behind, but Danso keeps pace and tackles him smartly. Spurs counter, and Odobert forces a good save from Martinez.

Matt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

14:26 , Arthur Ferridge

That's twice Spurs have swung a corner deep to the back post for Odobert. You assumed it was a mistake the first time, but the exact same routine is pulled out again. Not the most imposing figure, to put it mildly, but he did almost get a foot on it this time.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:25 , Arthur Ferridge

25mins: The corner falls to Odobert, and he bundles it out of play for a goal kick.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:25 , Arthur Ferridge

25mins: Porro does well to win another corner for Spurs, getting the better of Pau.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:23 , Arthur Ferridge

23mins: Odobert seems to have been tripped on the edge of the area, but Simon Hooper hears no complaints. Curious call - definitely contact there...

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:22 , Arthur Ferridge

21mins: Emi Martinez makes a very easy claim from Kudus’ corner. Wasted opportunity.

Villa look to play out, but Rogers is clattered by Van de Ven. Spurs stand-in captain is booked.

Matt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

14:21 , Arthur Ferridge

Van de Ven is sticking with Rogers when the visitors have the ball, even if that means pressing well into the Villa half. Means Danso and Spence are being left 2-v-2 at the back for Spurs, but so far it's working.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:20 , Arthur Ferridge

20mins: Spurs have struggled to play around Vilal’s press here, but Odobert does well to dribble over halfway having started in the defensive third. He is eventually caught up, though, and loses the ball.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:17 , Arthur Ferridge

17mins: Villa have a spell in possession, but another sloppy miscontrol from Digne ends their latest attack. Spurs break, but Cash calls a half to their foray forward.

Villa respond in kind, but Malen fouls Porro. Things opening up now!

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:15 , Arthur Ferridge

15mins: Cash has a crack from range, but his low driven effort is narrowly wide of the left post.

Matt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

14:14 , Arthur Ferridge

This is the first time Simons has started at No10 at home in the Premier League for Spurs and he's barely had a kick so far. It's pretty much been the Kudus show in attack.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:14 , Arthur Ferridge

13mins: After an admittedly sloppy start, Spurs are settling down a bit. They are passing around the back and slowing the play down.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:12 , Arthur Ferridge

12mins: The corner is dealt with by Spurs, but Cash’s shot is deflected behind and they will have another go. The second attempt is even worse, though, and is straight out for a goal kick.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:11 , Arthur Ferridge

11mins: Bentancur the goalscorer makes a hash of his backpass and hands Villa a free corner.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:10 , Arthur Ferridge

10mins: Matty Cash takes liberties at the throw and creeps too far forward. Spurs’ ball. Sloppy error for Villa - unneeded.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:09 , Arthur Ferridge

9mins: Where do Villa go from here? Plenty of time to right the ship, but Spurs look incredibly comfortable after that fast start.

Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

14:07 , Arthur Ferridge

7mins: Kudus thinks he’s doubled Spurs’ lead with a lovely goal shortly after the opener, but replays show he was well offside.

Matt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

14:07 , Arthur Ferridge

It had been a fairly muted start on the pitch and in the stands, but that has got the stadium bouncing. Thomas Frank said his side needed to give the fans something to get excited about - that helps. Perfect start

GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa | Bentancur '5

14:06 , Arthur Ferridge

Bentancur opens the scoring! The corner was poor, but Spurs recycled it immediately. Kudus gets it in the mixer and Van de Ven knocks it back across the box for Bentancur to fire home.

Tottenham 0-0 Aston Villa

14:04 , Arthur Ferridge

4mins: Tel picks Konsa’s pocket in the backfield and wins a corner for Spurs. Great pressing.

Tottenham 0-0 Aston Villa

14:03 , Arthur Ferridge

4mins: McGinn wins possession in midfield and has his head up, but he’s hooked back by Kudus. Villa take their free kick and attack through Digne, who mashes his cross well beyond the 18-yard box.

Tottenham 0-0 Aston Villa

14:02 , Arthur Ferridge

2mins: A bit of a placid start here, and it is broken up as our referee heads to the sideline to have his earpiece adjusted.

KICK-OFF! Tottenham 0-0 Aston Villa

14:00 , Arthur Ferridge

We are underway at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium! Can Spurs overcome the loss of their captain?

Not long to go now...

13:55 , Arthur Ferridge

With just 10 minutes to kick-off, here’s a reminder of our XIs for this afternoon.

Tottenham starting XI: Vicario; Danso, Van de Ven, Porro, Spence; Bentancur, Palhinha, Xavi; Kudus, Tel, Odobert

Aston Villa starting XI: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Pau, Digne; Onana, Kamara, McGinn; Guessand, Rogers, Malen

Matt Verri at Hotspur Stadium

13:45 , Arthur Ferridge

Big, big blow for Tottenham. Cristian Romero left the warm-up early and went down the tunnel, with Kevin Danso stepping in to join the back four instead. He was pinging passes out to Micky van de Ven to get up to speed and it's now been confirmed that he will start in Romero's place.

Inside Frank's selection

13:43 , Arthur Ferridge

Frank reveals to Sky Sports that Randal Kolo Muani was not quite ready to start today, and explains - again - where he thinks Simons’ best position is.

“It was easier than Kolo Muani, he is nowhere near ready to start. That is not a challenge. Richy has done well, I just thought Mathys looked good last game, and I want to build on that momentum.

“I keep saying that (Xavi) can play both positions. You never know what you’re gonna get. Sometimes he’s best off the left, sometimes down the middle. It is not only about him. There are ten other players.”

TEAM NEWS

13:42 , Arthur Ferridge

Kevin Danso has replaced Cristian Romero in the Tottenham starting XI, with Micky van de Ven taking the captain’s armband.

In case you missed it...

13:35 , Arthur Ferridge

Across London at Brisbane Road Stadium, Tottenham Women are in League Cup action, facing Birmingham City in their second of three group stage outings.

They also kick off at 2pm.

Where in the world is Destiny Udogie?

13:25 , Arthur Ferridge

Destiny Udogie has been ruled out of Tottenham's match at home to Aston Villa with a knee injury.

The Italian started against Leeds a fortnight ago but he drops out of the lineup at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, in the only change to the side that won at Elland Road.

It is not believed to be a significant issue, but it is enough to mean he misses out on the squad completely against Aston Villa.

Aston Villa XI

13:10 , Arthur Ferridge

No massive surprises from Unai Emery here.

It is a slight surprise to see Harvey Elliott named to the bench.

It is good, also, to see Ollie Watkins in the squad after he suffered a nasty collision with a goalpost on international duty.

Tottenham XI

13:05 , Arthur Ferridge

Some interesting calls from Thomas Frank here.

Lucas Bergvall has been very impressive this season, but drops to the bench alongside Pape Matar Sarr.

Joao Palhinha, unsurprisingly, holds onto his place, while Mathys Tel gets the nod up top.

Perhaps most importantly, though, Kolo Muani is finally back in the side.

Matt Verri at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

12:58 , Arthur Ferridge

Richarlison on the bench so it's the same front four for Spurs that looked sharp against Leeds before the international break. That means starts for Tel and Odobert, who both shone for the France U21 side over the past fortnight. Kolo Muani back in the squad at long, long last after a dead leg.

ASTON VILLA TEAM NEWS

12:49 , Arthur Ferridge

Here’s how the visitors line up.

Aston Villa starting XI: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Pau, Digne; Onana, Kamara, McGinn; Guessand, Rogers, Malen

Subs: Bizot, Maatsen, Lindelof, Barkley, Watkins, Sancho, Buendia, Elliott, Bogarde

TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS

Spurs are on location! Line-ups will be out in just a few minutes...

Tel ready to reclaim place

12:30 , Arthur Ferridge

Mathys Tel said he is ready to fight his way back into Thomas Frank’s Champions League squad after being excluded earlier this season.

“To be honest, I was very, very mad for a lot of weeks,” he said of Frank’s decision to leave him out.

“But I was like, ‘use this and show him you need to be on the squad list’. Bad things help me more than good things to be better.

“I’m a fair person and I was not on a good day for the [Super Cup] final, I didn’t play well enough.

“After the game against Leeds, [Frank] pushed me to the fans and that was quite emotional for me because he showed me that ‘I didn’t put you in the squad, but you’re still there, I still believe in you’.”

Matt Verri previews Tottenham vs Aston Villa

12:20 , Arthur Ferridge

It was just under a year ago that Tottenham came from behind to beat Aston Villa 4-1 in north London, writes Standard Sport’s Matt Verri.

Dominic Solanke scored twice, James Maddison netted a wonderful free-kick late in stoppage-time and had Spurs known what was to follow, they might have celebrated that result a bit more.

Aston Villa return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this afternoon and since that encounter in November last year, Spurs have won just three Premier League matches on home soil.

Despite a largely positive start under Frank, there has been a tense edge to much of the action on home soil. Spurs have rarely been at their fluent best, often either trailing or holding a narrow lead, and anxiety has grown around the stadium.

READ THE FULL MATCH PREVIEW HERE!

Standard Sport prediction

12:10 , Arthur Ferridge

Frank’s injury-hit Tottenham will have their work cut out for them as Villa visit north London this weekend.

After a concerningly slow start to the campaign, the Villans have hit superb form, heading into the international break having won four on the trot.

Spurs have all the tools they need to hold their own against the high-flying Villans, though, and with the home crowd at their backs, should have few problems.

Tottenham to win, 2-1

Aston Villa early team news

12:01 , Arthur Ferridge

Ollie Watkins is expected to be fit for Villa despite withdrawing from England duty with a knock suffered after scoring against Wales.

Emi Buendia and Jadon Sancho have trained all week, while Tyrone Mings may also be involved. Youri Tielemans and Andres Garcia are doubts.

Tottenham early team news

11:50 , Arthur Ferridge

Tottenham remain without Dominic Solanke, though Randal Kolo Muani looks set to return this weekend.

Yves Bissouma faces weeks on the sidelines with a new ankle injury, while Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison are still out and the likes of Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin and Kota Takai doubtful.
