Tottenham 4-1 Southampton, Newcastle 2-0 Nottingham Forest: clockwatch – as it happened

That’s it for today’s clockwatch. Thanks for your company and emails, and don’t forget to join Barry for the late game. Ta-ra!

Leeds 2-1 Wolves

And finally, Will Unwin was at Elland Road to watch new-look Leeds recover impressively against Wolves.

Newcastle 2-0 Nottm Forest

There’s a lot of expectation at Newcastle, and they started their season with an emphatic win at St James’ Park. Louise Taylor was watching.

Bournemouth 2-0 Aston Villa

Ben Fisher was at the Vitality Stadium on a very good day for AFC Bournemouth. Here’s his report.

A reminder that Everton v Chelsea kicks off soon. Barry Glendenning is your man for that, and so much more.

“Hi Rob!” says Liz. “My season predictions: More Canadians following your live updates. The EPL sold the Cdn rights to a different streaming service for the next three seasons, and so far it’s a very expensive dumpster fire. The last service only several seasons to figure out how to stream more than a minute or two without buffering. Back to radio and live updates for me. Sigh.”

I feel your pain. I’d be sighing if I had to read me for the next nine months.

Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 Southampton

Here’s Ed Aarons’ report from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where the home side made Antonio Conte happy. Probably.

Fulham 2-2 Liverpool

Here’s Jurgen Klopp on a surprisingly scruffy start to the Premier League season from Liverpool.

Full time: Bournemouth 2-0 Aston Villa

And a perfect return to the Premier League for Bournemouth, who scored early and late to beat a disappointing Aston Villa.

Full time: Leeds 2-1 Wolves

That’s an excellent win for new-look Leeds, who recovered from conceding an early goal to deservedly beat Wolves.

Full time: Newcastle 2-0 Nottm Forest

Pop quiz, hotshot: when did Newcastle last start a Premier League season with such optimism? It might be 1995-96, you know. They were emphatic winners today, with Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson scoring excellent goals. Nottingham Forest have had a reality check.

Full time: Tottenham 4-1 Southampton

Spurs have come from behind to spank Southampton. Dejan Kulusevski was the star: he made the equaliser for Ryan Sessegnon and scored the fourth. There was also two assists for Emerson Royal, and a desperate own goal from Mohammed Salisu.

GOAL! Ross County 1-3 Celtic (Abada 90)

That’ll do.

Updated

“So far Leeds-Wolves is a tale of two players,” says Kári Tulinius. “Leeds are so much sharper up front with Bamford back, and the Wolves defense looks porous without Coady.”

4-2-3-1 out!

GOAL! Rangers 2-0 Kilmarnock (Morelos 88)

Alfredo Morelos has sealed victory for Rangers. Even at this stage - at the start of bloody August - they and Celtic will feel like every game against The Rest is a must-win.

“Am sure Brenden Aaronson is motivated to be the first name on the teamsheet,” says Ian Copestake, “having been edged out of the phonebook by Aaron A. Aaronson.”

GOAL! Ross County 1-2 Celtic (Jenz 84)

The debutant Moritz Jenz has put the champions ahead at the Global Energy Stadium.

CORRECTION! Leeds 2-1 Wolves (Ait-Nouri 74 og)

It seems Leeds’ second goal was scored by the Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, who must have got in front of Brenden Aaronson. Either way, it was a devastating cross from Bamford.

GOAL! Bournemouth 2-0 Aston Villa (Moore 80)

The substitute Kieffer Moore has doubled Bournemouth’s lead! They are 10 minutes away from a memorable return to the Premier League.

Game over at St James’ Park. Callum Wilson gets in front of a defender to flick Joelinton’s cross past Dean Henderson. That’s a really stylish finish, which seals a thoroughly deserved victory for Newcastle.

GOAL! Leeds 2-1 Wolves (Aaronson 74)

Brenden Aaronson caps a terrific debut by putting Leeds in front! It was a fairly simple finish, sidefooted past Jose Sa from a brilliant low cross by Patrick Bamford.

Championship Sunderland, who were 1-0 up and 2-1 down at Bristol City, now lead 3-2 thanks to a goal from Ross Stewart.

Leeds 1-1 Wolves

“Wolves have been brilliant so far in the second half,” says Mac Millings, “and Pedro Neto just executed a sublime turn between two Leeds players that had me emitting a very loud private-moment noise.”

GOAL! Spurs 4-1 Southampton (Kulusevski 63)

Dejan Kulusevski, who has been brilliant all day, gets Tottenham’s fourth! It was a classy finish, stroked across Bazunu from eight yards after a cutback from Emerson Royal.

GOAL! Spurs 3-1 Southampton (Salisu og 61)

A farcical own goal from Mohammed Salisu has given Spurs a two-goal cushion at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Emerson Royal’s tame cross would have rolled safely across goal, but Salisu got in a tangle and turned it into his own net. He’ll regret that in the morning.

Well, well: Alex Iacovitti has equalised for Ross County against Celtic.

GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Nottm Forest (Schar 58)

Fabian Schar wallops Newcastle into the lead! It was a helluva strike, boosted past Dean Henderson at the near post from at least 25 yards. He was a long way to the right of centre, so maybe Henderson could have done better. But it was a cracking hit from Schar.

Scotland department Celtic are no longer goalless - Kyogo Furuhashi has put them ahead at Ross County.

Peep peep! The second halves are under way.

Scotland department

“Celtic are Rangers are both goalless at half time against Ross County and Kilmarnock respectively,” writes Simon McMahon. “St. Johnstone lead 1-0 at Motherwell, and even the most optimistic St. Mirren fan must realise the game is up already at Aberdeen, where they are down to 10 men and trailing 3-0 after the first 45 minutes.”

“Hi Bob,” says Mac Millings. “Since we’re all making early predictions now, after my Hornets won their opener on Monday, please allow me to congratulate them on their promotion this season, but also offer my commiserations for their relegation next year.”

A real man would have called the 2024-25 season as well.

“The scorers at Spurs usually get a clenched-fist yell on the big screens,” says John Tumbridge. “Spurs don’t seem to have one of these for Dier or Sessegnon.”

Given their respective scoring records at Spurs, I suspect even Roy Keane would figure this particular failure to prepare.

Leeds 1-1 Wolves

“Jesse [Marsch] has his lads playing in a fierce aggressive manner but the Leeds fan deserve partial credit,” says Mary Waltz. “They are screaming the minute Leeds get possession and it seems to intimidate the Wolves players.”

I think I said last night that, pound for pound, the best atmosphere in the Premier League is at Selhurst Park. Much as I admire Palace’s home support, my head was stuck in 2019-20.

“Spurs,” says George Meikle, “sure look onnit front foot wise.”

Can you please stop plagiarising Galeano?

League One It’s now Burton 0-4 Bristol Rovers, which gives them a goal difference of 0-7 after a game and a half. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s half-time teamtalk will be one for the books.

Half-time reading

Half time

Peep peep! Bournemouth and Spurs are ahead, Leeds have recovered well after conceding an early goal at Elland Road, and Nottingham Forest are somehow level at St James’ Park. These are the half-time scores:

  • Bournemouth 1-0 Aston Villa
  • Leeds 1-1 Wolves
  • Newcastle 0-0 Nottm Forest
  • Tottenham 2-1 Southampton

“Mary Waltz is an optimist’s pessimist,” says Billy Ditchburn. “It’s all over for Liverpool now. They can’t come back from this. Best they can hope for is to finish two points behind City, and it’ll be these two points.”

Leeds 1-1 Wolves On Soccer Saturday, Clinton Morrison is full of praise for Leeds’ first-half performance. It sounds like their intensity has been a real problem for Wolves.

“Thankfully,” says Ian Copestake, “the solution to the Dony downer types is to embrace the tree marked ‘football is about the journey and not the result’. Obviously it’s a big tree.”

Correction: QPR are now 3-1 up against Middlesbrough. It’s still going to be fascinating to see how Michael Beale, such a highly regarded coach, does this season.

QPR are now 3-0 up against Middlesbrough. It’s going to be fascinating to see how Michael Beale, such a highly regarded coach, does this season.

Newcastle 0-0 Nottm Forest It’s goalless at St James’ Park, but it sounds like Newcastle are battering Nottingham Forest: 66 per cent possession, 13 shots to Forest’s one.

A reminder that you follow all today’s goals on our live scores page. All bar three of the games in the Championship are level.

  • QPR 2-0 Middlesbrough
  • Sheff Utd 2-0 Millwall
  • Burnley 0-1 Luton

“Far be it for me to deny any football fan their pessimism - as an Everton fan I know it too well - but City lost their opener last season and still won the crown so maybe Mr. Dony should step down from the ledge,” pleads Mary Waltz.

GOAL! Tottenham 2-1 Southampton (Dier 32)

Spurs have come from behind to lead. A corner was half cleared and eventually back out to the taker, Son, on the left. He whipped it back into the middle, where Eric Dier was lurking with appreciable intent. He stooped to guide a deft header across Bazunu and into the net. Both Spurs’ goals have come from defenders.

“Well, this is officially the earliest that the pessimism has ever struck,” wails Matt Dony. “I’d like to be the first to offer my congratulations to Man City for winning the league this year. Liverpool’s job now is to blood some youngsters and keep it respectable for the rest of the season, ready to go again next August.”

GOAL! Leeds 1-1 Wolves (Rodrigo 24)

Leeds are level, and it sounds like they deserve this equaliser. After Ait-Nouri was caught in possession, Rodrigo made just enough room to swish a shot through Jose Sa at the near post. Sa, who had a stinker when Leeds won dramatically at Wolves in March, should have done better.

“Afternoon Rob,” says Simon McMahon. “Today’s SPL games are Rangers v Kilmarnock, Ross County v Celtic, Aberdeen v St. Mirren and Motherwell v St. Johnstone. Just kicked off and no goals in any of the games yet. But enough of that. Europa Conference League third qualifying round first leg giant killers Dundee United are at home to Livingston tomorrow and will be assured of a rapturous welcome from the Tannadice faithful after Thursday night’s famous victory over AZ Alkmaar rekindled memories of European glory nights from the 1980s. The second leg is in Holland next week and I’m nervous already. Only five days to go…”

Leeds 0-1 Wolves Leeds have had a big penalty appeal rejected by VAR. The chaps on Sky Sports thought it was a clear foul by Jose Sa on Rasmus Kristensen; Stockley Park’s finest did not.

League One Burton’s first home game of the season is a study in the destruction of optimism. Having lost 3-0 at Wycombe last weekend, they’re already two goals and a man down at home to Bristol Rovers.

GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Southampton (Ward-Prowse 12)

If only we could hear Antonio Conte’s internal monologue right now. James Ward-Prowse, as reliable as oxygen, has put Southampton ahead, guiding an excellent volley past Hugo Lloris.

Peeeeeeeeeeeeeep peeeeeeeeeeeeeep! For Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Leeds, Wolves, Newcastle, Nottm Forest, Spurs and Southampton, the 2022-23 season is under way.

The early game in the Championship finished Norwich 1-1 Wigan. James McClean gave newly promoted Wigan the lead at Carrow Road; Max Aarons equalised in the second half.

Fulham 2-2 Liverpool

Here’s John Brewin’s report on that thriller at Craven Cottage.

“For the first time in years, Tottenham are going into a Premier League with all eyes on the players, the manager and what they can do this season rather than moaning about what Daniel Levy is doing,” says Yash Gupta. “Being realistic I think the 86-point tally from the 2016/17 season can be reached. Optimistic me thinks an outside title challenge is possible. Nervous me thinks Son’s legs are about to fall off after Conte’s preseason.”

For that show of weakness, do another 50 shuttle runs.

Full time: Fulham 2-2 Liverpool

A cracking game ends all square. Fulham led twice through Aleksandar Mitrovic, but the substitute Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah equalised for Liverpool. Nunez knew very little about his goal or his assist for Salah, but his desire and movement definitely changed the game. He looks a right handful.

Updated

So, what’s new?

This is a fine piece on the exciting Leon Bailey, who starts for Villa at Bournemouth today.

GOAL! Fulham 2-2 Liverpool (Salah 80)

A second equaliser for Liverpool at Craven Cottage, this one from the inevitable Mo Salah. It’s a cracking game, which has around eight minutes to go.

There are 15 minutes remaining at Craven Cottage, where - would you believe it, Frank - Fulham lead Liverpool 2-1. Barry Glendenning has the latest.

Tottenham v Southampton team news

No new faces in the Spurs XI, though Ivan Perisic is one of five new faces on the bench. Richarlison isn’t among them; he’s suspended after misbehaving with a flare when Everton beat Chelsea last season.

Southampton’s team includes three summer signings: Gavin Bazunu, Joe Aribo and Romeo Lavia.

Updated

Newcastle v Nottm Forest team news

Nick Pope starts in goal for Newcastle, but the new centre-back Sven Botman is only on the bench.

The Forest team includes five debutants (I think): Neco Williams, Jesse Lingard, Moussa Niakhate, Harry Toffolo and Lewis O’Brien.

Updated

Leeds v Wolves team news

Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams, Marc Roca and Rasmus Kristensen are all in the Leeds team. Wolves include the exciting Irish centre-back Nathan Collins in their reshaped defence - it’s a back four, with no room for Conor Coady.

Updated

Bournemouth v Aston Villa team news

Marcus Tavernier, Bournemouth’s big summer signing, starts in midfield.

Villa include Diego Carlos and Boubacar Kamara, while Danny Ings is preferred to Ollie Watkins.
