Ha-ha!!! The context here is that I mentioned in a pre-season podcast that the amount of money Everton had spent on the Brazilian was ridiculous. While the tweet above is very funny, what Andy doesn’t say is that during the week Everton came out and agreed that they had overpaid Watford.

A couple of world class saves in the Premier League: Jordan Pickford leaves Danny Ings staring at him in slack-jawed disbelief after saving brilliantly from the striker in Everton’s match against Southampton. Premier League: No goals at Wembley, where it sounds like Fulham are getting an absolute pasting from Spurs. “Fulham playing like rabbits in the headlights at Wembley,” writes Jeremy Dresner. “If you can imagine a hunter chasing and pressing a team of rabbits relentlessly until the the exhausted rabbits resign to their well lit fate. What I’m saying is spurs are the brighter team.” We got there in the end.

Premier League: Wolves hit the woodwork again against Leicester. This time it’s Raul Jimenez who hits the post from distance. Somehow, despite the best efforts of Wolves, it remains scoreless at the King Power Stadium.

Championship: Aston Villa lead Ipswich Town 1-0 at Portman Road, where Jonathan Kodjia has scored his first goal in 17 games after 21 minutes.

Championship: Millwall have doubled their lead against Derby County at the Den, with Shaun Williams spanking one in from distance. His shot took a deflection and the goal may be taken away from him. Elsewhere, Middlesbrough are a goal to the good against Bristol City at Ashton Gate. Denmark striker Martin Braithwaite scores his third goal of the season to put Tony Pulis’s side ahead.

Championship: Bad news for Frank Lampard, whose Derby County side are behind at the Den against Millwall. Lee Gregory with the goal there. Meanwhile at Bramall Lane, John Egan has put Sheffield United ahead against Norwich City after nine minutes.

Championship: Wigan go one up against Nottingham Forest, with midfield wizard Nick Powell doing the honours. Ben Fisher interviewed him for the Guardian this week.

Lucas Moura misses a sitter: The Tottenham winger heads wide from a Ben Davies cross when scoring looked easier.

Early chances for Wolves: The visitors have raced out of the traps against Leicester and could be two up already. Joao Moutinho has smashed a shot off the upright, while Matt Doherty has had a shot cleared off the line by Ben Chilwell.

Play slightly delayed at Wembley: Tottenham’s match against Fulham started slightly late after a minute’s applause for club legend Alan Gilzean, who passed away in July. You can read his obituary below.

A late penalty at the Cardiff City Stadium

Premier League: Kenedy has missed a penalty for Newcastle in the fifth minute of added time in Cardiff. Sean Morrison handled in the penalty area and the Brazilian, who has had a nightmare day at the office, takes the spot-kick and Neil Etheridge has saved.

Why on earth did Rafael Benitez let Kenedy take that penalty? He’s been dismal today and is indeed lucky to be on the field after avoiding a red card in the first half. Newcastle fans will perhaps regret that he didn’t get his marching orders. It’s all over now: Cardiff City 0-0 Newcastle is a result.

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds hope to maintain their perfect start to the season when they take on Rotherham at Elland Road in one of nine Championship fixtures kicking off at 3pm this afternoon. Aston Villa travel to Ipswich, having also won two games from two. Also unbeaten, Swansea City and Birmingham City played out a scoreless draw at St Andrew’s last night.

Premier League fixtures

Chelsea entertain Arsenal later this evening in what is arguably the weekend’s stand-out fixture, while Cardiff City and Newcastle are currently playing out today’s lunchtime kick-off. It’s scoreless after 15 minutes of the second half. Newcastle were atrocious throughout the opening 45 minutes and were lucky not to have Kenedy sent off for a petulant kick at Victor Camarasa shortly after the half-hour mark. They remain under the cosh, but Cardiff have been toothless up front, failing to convert several decent chances from crosses. Away from the Welsh capital, here are this afternoon’s other fixtures.
