Tottenham transfer news: Battle with Arsenal for Leicester's James Maddison hots up

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has not been afraid to splash the cash this summer to enable the club to keep apace with their Premier League rivals and give a good account of themselves in the Champions League on their return this season.

Spurs have already done deals for Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence which has made a sizable dent into his £150m transfer war chest.

However, Conte does not look to be done just yet as he attempts to finalise his squad before the window shuts next month. Mirror Sport has rounded up the latest Spurs transfer news, rumours and gossip.

Maddison chase gets heated

Tottenham and arch rivals Arsenal could be set for a catfight over England midfielder James Maddison. According to Football London the London giants are set to emerge from the dust kicked up by Newcastle ’s failed attempt to land the £70m-rated star. Antonio Conte and Emirates rival Mikel Arteta are braced for their clubs to lock horns to try and grab the talented 25-year-old.

Speculation surrounding Maddison has been rumbling for months but the matter has been brought a head this week with the ambitious Geordies making an audacious attempt to sign him. Sources at Leicester seem to indicate that the two bids made by the Magpies haven’t been treated that seriously. An opening offer of £35m was rejected out of hand and a follow up bid of £40m in ‘staggered’ payments was viewed with equal disdain.

The Foxes point to the £100m record price Man City forked out for Jack Grealish as the nearest barometer to Maddison’s worth. Even accepting that the Grealish deal was down to a lot of factors, Leicester remain puzzled as to why anyone would value Maddison at less than half that. Boss Brendan Rodgers indicated as much with his withering assertion that the opening bid wouldn't be enough to get three quarters of the player’s left leg. Leicester need cash to come in before they can think about any significant incomings. They are the only Premier League side not to have brought in a single player this summer. So, maybe they are prone to a late raid for the mercurial Maddison and the North London giants are reported to be ready to slug it out.

Zaniolo latest

Conte must be getting fed-up with the protracted attempts to get playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo out of Roma. Zaniolo has fallen out of favour with Roma boss Jose Mourinho and Tottenham have had him on their radar for some time. 90min reports that Spurs remain in talks with the Italian club and are desperately trying to get a deal over the line. The 23-year-old had an impressive campaign in Serie A last season and would cost in the region of £40m.

Another arrival could be highly-rated young Udinese star Destiny Udogie. According to Mail Online a deal is in the offing which would see the 19-year-old sensation join Spurs but go back to the Serie A side on loan for the coming season to bring along his development. According to Football London Spurs are satisfied with Villareal’s £13m offer for Giovani Lo Celso. The deal is reported to be a season long-loan deal with an obligation to buy next summer.
