Tottenham transfer net spend is 'not acceptable' for one of Premier League's biggest teams, says Jamie Carragher

Daniel Levy must allow Tottenham to spend more money on transfers if Mauricio Pochettino is going to win silverware any time soon, says Jamie Carragher.

Since Pochettino's arrival at Tottenham in 2014, Sky Sports reports that Spurs have spent £254million in transfer fees while receiving £225m to leave a net spend of £29m.

Spurs' net spending pales in comparison to the rest of the big six Premier League clubs: Manchester City (£518m), Manchester United (£466m), Arsenal (£225m), Chelsea (£200m) and Liverpool (£183m) have all overspent Spurs by at least £100m.

In a board-to-board meeting with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust (THST) earlier in October, Levy confirmed that the rising cost of Spurs' unfinished new stadium has forced the club to make cuts - but that the project had no impact on their lack of summer signings.

The net spend of Man City - Spurs' opponents on Monday night - is almost £500m more by comparison, and Pep Guardiola's side showed their quality with a 1-0 win at Wembley.

Carragher feels that despite Pochettino's success in building a competitive team with a mixture of emerging England stars and shrewd signings on a tight budget, Spurs have reached their ceiling unless chairman Daniel Levy makes bigger moves in the transfer market.

In the build-up to the match, Carragher told Sky Sports' Monday Night Football show: "Tottenham will not get better if the net spend doesn’t change.

"The job Pochettino has done is unbelievable - to get Tottenham into the top four consistently and over achieve.

"In five-10 years the team will break up and the manager will be gone and nobody will be looking at net spend and points; they will say 'did they win anything?'

"At the moment it looks like the answer will be no. No way should the manager and the players get that thrown at them, if anyone should it’s Daniel Levy and the board.

"[A] net spend of £29m is not acceptable for one of the biggest teams in the country; teams who come up to the Premier League have a bigger net spend.

"The fact Tottenham are where they are is because of Mauricio Pochettino and the players.

"Daniel Levy has done a great job with the training ground, infrastructure and stadium, but you have the best Tottenham team and manager for 30 years and £29m net spend is not enough if you want them to win something."
