Tottenham to face Rapid Wien in Europa Conference League if UEFA's Rennes outcome goes their way

Tottenham will face Rapid Wien in the Europa Conference League knockout round play-off if UEFA's outcome over their postponed game against Rennes goes in their favour.

Needing to beat the French side on Thursday evening in their final Group G game with Vitesse also in a battle for the runners-up spot, the match was postponed due to a Covid outbreak at Spurs.

With question marks over when exactly it would be played, UEFA confirmed on Saturday morning that the game would no longer go ahead as both clubs couldn't agree on a new date.

It will now be down to the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body to decide the outcome of the fixture, with a decision hopefully made by the end of the week.

Given it is still unclear whether it will be Tottenham or Vitesse who advance to the knockout round play-off, both teams were included in the draw.

As a result, one of the teams will come up against Austrian side Rapid Wien in the play-off tie.

The first leg is due to take place on Thursday, February 17, with the second leg taking place the following week.

The winners will then advance to the Europa Conference League Round of 16, which commences on Thursday, March 10.

In a statement from UEFA on Saturday morning regarding Tottenham's postponed game against Rennes, UEFA said: “Following a COVID-19 outbreak in the team of Tottenham Hotspur FC ahead of the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage match against Stade Rennais FC, scheduled to take place on 9 December 2021 in London, the match could not take place.

"In accordance with Annex J of the UEFA Europa Conference League regulations, UEFA, in cooperation with the two clubs tried to find a viable solution in order to reschedule the match, so as to ensure the group stage could be completed accordingly.

"Unfortunately, despite all efforts, a solution that could work for both clubs could not be found.

"As a consequence, the match can no longer be played and the matter will, therefore, be referred to the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body for a decision to be taken in accordance with Annex J of the above-mentioned competition regulations."
