Tottenham to assess Lucas Bergvall after fresh injury scare

Fears: Lucas Bergvall - (Action Images via Reuters)

Lucas Bergvall will be assessed by Tottenham’s medical staff ahead of this weekend’s game against Burnley amid fresh injury fears.

The midfielder was forced off during Tuesday’s win over Borussia Dortmund with a suspected ankle injury. After initially trying to carry on following a knock, Bergvall was replaced by 17-year-old debutant Jun'ai Byfield.

Bergvall has struggled with injuries all season. He was forced to miss a number of games with concussion during November, and was forced off during the win at Crystal Palace in December.

Speaking after the 2-0 win, Spurs head coach Frank confirmed that Bergvall would be assessed and expects to know more ahead of Thursday’s press conference, which will preview Saturday’s trip to Turf Moor.

“It was a contact (injury), and they are assessing him now, so we will know more on Thursday,” Frank told TNT Sports.

This is the third time in the space of a month that Bergvall has had to come off injured, and Spurs will be careful to manage the 19-year-old’s fitness, with a number of first-team players having already suffered long-term injuries.

Frank had just 11 senior outfield players to pick from against Dortmund, owing to injuries, suspension, and ineligibility, while several players, including midfielders Xavi Simons and Archie Gray, played through pain.

James Maddison, Mohammed Kudus, Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski, Ben Davies, and Rodrigo Bentancur are all long-term absentees, and it is unclear how serious Joao Palhinha’s injury is after the Portuguese midfielder missed the last two games with a knock picked up in training last week.

Frank’s options in midfield are severely depleted, but the Dane will be able to call upon Conor Gallagher again after he missed the Dortmund game through ineligibility.

Spurs moved quickly to bring Gallagher to the club after Bentancur underwent successful hamstring surgery last Tuesday, and having made his debut at home to West Ham, the Englishman is set to come straight back into the starting line-up against Burnley.

Frank remains under serious pressure, but victory over Dortmund has bought him some time to turn things around as Spurs look for their first league win of 2026.
