Tottenham to appeal Son Heung-min's Everton red card following Andre Gomes injury incident

Tottenham have appealed the decision to send off Heung-Min Son for the foul that resulted in Andre Gomes' horror injury on Sunday.

Everton midfielder Gomes has since undergone successful surgery on the ankle fracture dislocation.Son's sliding challenge caused the injury and the South Korean attacker was initially shown a yellow card for the offence.

But on seeing Gomes' injury, referee Martin Atkinson would instead brandish a red card to Son, who would leave the field in tears.Speaking after the game, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino brandished the decision "unbelievable".

He said: "It is unbelievable he received the red card. If it’s not up to the refs then we are in a big mess, it is going to change the spirit of football.

"VAR changed the game because it changed the yellow card to red. It is creating a big mess. It was very, very tough, completely unfair for Son, completely unfair for Tottenham and very difficult to understand this type of situation.

"It was clear it was never the intention of Son to create the situation afterwards.

"I don’t know if we will appeal the red card, I don’t know if it is possible, but will it change it, because what we can’t change all that happened after the red card."
