Tottenham transfer news: Spurs targeting two strikers with Krzysztof Piatek and Edinson Cavani options

Jose Mourinho wants two strikers this January to cover for the injury to Harry Kane. AC Milan's Krzysztof Piatek has been offered as one of the main options so far, amid a number of potential deals in what is likely to be a busy window.

Mourinho had already been looking for a back-up to Kane, for a role that has been something of an issue for Tottenham Hotspur, but the extent of the England captain's injury has caused a rethink.

The Portuguese is understood to have insisted on the necessity of bringing in two if Spurs are to have any chance of returning to the Champions League next season.

Milan are willing to do a deal for Piatek, but The Independent has also been told that Kane's injury has caused a flood of agents to approach the club and manager with possible signings.

Former Spurs striker Fernando Llorente and one-time Mourinho target Christian Benteke are among those to have been floated.

Edinson Cavani had also been mooted but his likely wage package would be far too high, especially given any striker would still be second choice to Kane in the long term.

Mourinho is also hoping to at least bring in another centre-half and a midfielder in an active window, especially with Christian Eriksen on his way to Internazionale.

The manager was coy on the prospect of new signings this month when quizzed after Saturday's defeat to Liverpool.

“The last thing I want to do after this performance is talk about new players,” he said. “I think it’s a way to show respect to these guys is to not talk about new players. Can we say [Japhet] Tanganga is a new player? Can we say that? He never played a match for Tottenham in the Premier League. Today he played and today he proved that he can play for us.

“It’s a pity that he’s not a striker, it’s a pity that he’s not a midfield player, but he’s one more player that we have. So I think Mane and Salah, they know who Tanganga is. They didn’t know before the game. I think when they saw the list they wondered where this guy plays. I think now they know.

“The kid was really good so instead of speaking, or crying about Harry Kane and [Moussa] Sissoko and [Hugo] Lloris and Ben Davies, let’s smile with Tanganga.”
