Tottenham striker Harry Kane feeling 'fitter than ever' scoring first goal of 2020 to beat West Ham

Harry Kane says he is feeling "as fit as I have ever done" after scoring his first goal in 2020 in Tottenham's 2-0 win over West Ham.

The 26-year-old appeared to be lacking sharpness in the first half as he struggled to impose himself on the game before settling into his role leading the line with a header and long-range effort.

Spurs finally broke the deadlock thanks to an own goal from Tomas Soucek and with eight minutes to go, Kane rounded off the victory with a composed finish after an incisive breakaway from the hosts.

The physical effort Kane had put in to get in such a position to score was telling as he collapsed to the floor after finding the net, punching the air in relief as he bagged his first goal since returning from a serious hamstring injury.

And the Spurs striker revealed his delight at returning to action with a goal to silence those who had questioned his fitness.

"As a striker it is what you want to do, scoring goals and winning games," he told Sky Sports.

"I am happy to get on the scoresheet today. We had a few chances before the first one and it was nice to finish it off at the end.

"I've been out for six months and it's about getting the feeling back. You can work all you want but it is totally different being out there. I should have scored another but it was nice to get that one away.

Asked if he had any doubts about starting, Kane replied: "It is always the manager’s decision but I am in good shape.

"I have worked hard all through my rehab, lockdown and warm-up games so I feel as fit as I have ever done before. I got the chance to rest and recover when maybe I couldn’t over the years."
