Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente ready to step in for Harry Kane, says David Pleat

Fernando Llorente should be given a chance to prove his worth in the absence of Harry Kane, says former Tottenham manager David Pleat.

Kane, who has been ruled out until March following an ankle injury sustained in the dying seconds of the Man Utd defeat on Sunday , could miss up to ten games over the next month or so.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino would usually turn to forward Heung-min Son to lead the line when Kane is unavailable, but with the South Korean away on international duty at the Asian Cup, Spurs have been left short.

Pleat warned that there were no youth prospects ready to make the step up and fill the void up top, but insisted that Llorente should be given a chance.

"Llorente is a very honest trainer, he has had to play in the shadows, he is excellent in the air, and did wonderfully well for Swansea before he came to Spurs," Pleat told BBC 5Live.

"Last time he played he was excellent albeit against Tranmere.

"Fans should not be too downcast, it could be he goes in and does particularly well."

Ex-Spurs man Chris Waddle, however, feels Pochettino should avoid Llorente and give Brazilian Lucas Moura, who said on Monday he is "doing full time treatment to be ready as soon as possible" following a knee problem, a run through the middle.

"To lose him [Kane] until March is absolutely devastating," Waddle added.

"I'm sure they're looking around Europe, even someone out of favour who could do a job for three months. Could they get someone on loan with a fee to tick them over until the end of the season?

"Llorente you would think would come in but he's not as mobile as Kane. He's probably best going with [Lucas] Moura at the moment with [Dele] Alli behind."
