Tottenham starlet Troy Parrott picks one word to sum up his impressive Ireland debut

Troy Parrott had just one word which he felt summed up his first experience of full international football for Ireland.

The 17-year-old Tottenham Hotspur striker was handed a start by Ireland manager Mick McCarthy in the friendly against New Zealand.

Parrott did not look out of place on the international stage and popped up with an assist in the second half, battling for the ball and laying it off to Sean Maguire  to score Ireland's second goal in their 3-1 victory.

The Spurs teenager had a big chance of his own moments later, making a clever run into the box to take a pass but the goalkeeper ended up smothering his effort. He was substituted soon after having made a big impression on the crowd.

After the match, Parrott took to social media to sum up his experience and simply posted a photo of himself in action in the green shirt, with the message: "One word. Wow."

McCarthy was very happy with the teenager's efforts but urged caution over the excitement surrounding him.

"Oh, he can handle himself at this level, I don't doubt that. He was tracking back and he tackled their centre-half and he got all upset [Winston Reid]," said the Ireland boss.

"I know he's been out, so you don't want him to get injured - but well done, that's what it's about.

"Welcome to men's football, because then he was getting a little bit bullied by him. But he stood up to it, and he's done fine."

He added: "Troy did okay. He didn't set the world on fire, but what he did I was really pleased with.

"He ran the channels, had a couple of chances... I know everyone is desperate for him to score, but the keeper thwarted him. I was pleased, overall."

Parrott told the media after the game that he would be delighted to face Denmark in Monday's crunch Euro qualifier: "Of course, yeah, that's the dream for everyone. Obviously it's a massive game, and we've taken tonight's positive result going into Monday's big game.

"I was just delighted to get out there. Walking out in the green jersey in my home town of Dublin is the best feeling I've ever felt.

"I felt I did well. I had a couple of chances - I could have maybe taken them, but I felt I did well.''

He added: "Of course I have been satisfied with the strides I've been making as I've made my debut for Tottenham and I've come in here and made my debut for Ireland.

"But I'm just going to try to keep on doing what I can do, working hard and trying to learn from people, and hopefully I can go far in the game.''
