However, just five games into his Tottenham career Bergwijn injured his ankle late in the 1-1 draw against Burnley at Turf Moor this month.

"Following assessment and examination by our medical team, we can confirm that Steven Bergwijn suffered a significant sprain to his left ankle during our match against Burnley," the club announced.

"The Netherlands international will now undergo an extended period of rehabilitation where his progress will continue to be assessed."

This week Bergwijn posted the image below on Snapchat showing how he is having to get around with his protective boot on and it doesn't look like a man who will be back in training any time soon.

Jose Mourinho believed Bergwijn's recovery will take some time and had initially ruled him out for the season.

However, the current suspension of the Premier League due to the coronavirus pandemic is likely see the campaign extended and could offer the young Dutchman some hope.

"Ben [Davies] one week, two weeks. Steven, I don’t expect him to play this season," said the Spurs boss ahead of the Champions League game at RB Leipzig.
