Tottenham star Heung-min Son wins military award for standout performance during national service

Tottenham star Heung-min Son has been awarded South Korea's Pilsung Prize after completing his military service.

Son has been in South Korea undertaking a basic three-week programme during the Premier League shutdown, capitalising on the absence of football to complete the compulsory camp ahead of schedule.

He was given special exemption from South Korea's mandatory 21-month military service in 2018 after captaining his country to a gold medal in the Asian Games, but was still required to complete this shortened month-long assignment.

After shaving off his hair, Son undertook a number of intense exercises including close combat sparring, weapons training and a 6-7km march in full combat gear weighing around 24kg.

Despite fracturing his arm against February's last-gasp win over Aston Villa, Son excelled during his military training.

The Pilsung prize - meaning 'certain victory' - was awarded during a closed ceremony, and was one of just five prizes dished out at the end of the assignment, with Son selected from 157 trainees.

"He received the Pilsung prize, which is one of five types of awards for best performers," a Marine Corps officer told The Korea Herald.

"All the courses were judged in a fair and strict manner, and his military training officers have said he went through the training faithfully."

Spurs have opened their training ground forindividual training sessions, but it remains to be seen whether Son will have to undergo a further two-week quarantine before teaming up with his Spurs colleagues ahead of the Premier League's proposed return.
