Tottenham star Gareth Bale desperate to take last chance to reach World Cup with Wales

Gareth Bale says he is desperate to realise his dream of finally playing at a World Cup - and admits this is his generation of Welsh players’ final chance to do so.

Wales begin their qualifying campaign for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar away to Belgium tonight.

Bale helped Wales qualify for Euro 2016, where they went on a memorable run to the semi-finals, and again for this summer’s delayed Championships, but the nation has not participated at a World Cup since 1958.

Bale is 31, and with other star men such as Aaron Ramsey also unlikely to be around by the 2026 World Cup, admits it is last chance saloon for the crop of players who made history in France in 2016 to play on the world stage.

“It would be amazing to play for Wales in a World Cup - that is the dream for me,” said the Wales captain.

“We need to give it a really good go and give everything for the country.

“It might be the last time our generation has the chance to qualify for a World Cup.

“It is massive for us and we want to try and take this opportunity to qualify. We haven’t done that for a long time.”
