Tottenham star Eric Dier told to 'stick to football' after tweeting support for People's Vote on Brexit

Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier has been told to "stick to football" after coming out in support of a People's Vote on Brexit.

In a tweet on Thursday, he wrote "#PeoplesVote," racking up 3,000 likes within an hour.

The 25-year-old, who has played for Spurs since 2014, joined a slew of public figures who have announced their support for a second referendum.

Comments flooded in with fans labelling Dier as "hero" and "my man."

However, Dier also came under fire with Twitter users telling him to "stick to football" and one writing: "Cue furious outrage at a sportsperson not just sticking to sport and interfering in politics."

Dave Clark wrote: "No he means a "People's Vote" for people who didn't win the first time."

Another commenter added: "Do I unfollow you or stay because you're Tottenham?"

In July 2018, former footballer and Match of the Day presenter, Gary Lineker also pledged his support for another Brexit vote, claiming Britain’s departure of the European Union “feels like it is going very wrong indeed”.

A stream of celebrities including Delia Smith, TV historian Dan Snow and Steve Coogan also pledged support to help people from their home towns and regions travel to the People's Vote March for the Future on October 20.

Actor Patrick Stewart, a supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, previously said campaigners were not asking for a second referendum but wanted “another chance to consider what the terms of this divorce are going to be.”
