Tottenham star a doubt for Champions League final against Liverpool after leaving Ajax on crutches

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen faces a fitness battle ahead of the Champions League final against Liverpool.

The Belgium international defender played the full game for Spurs as they turned around a two-goal deficit on the night against Ajax to edge through to the European final against the Reds on June 1.

However the Spurs star was seen leaving the Johan Cruyff ArenA on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

Crutches are relatively common for a footballer to use after picking up even a minor foot injury, but the need for the boot will be a concern for Mauricio Pochettino ahead of Spurs' first-ever European final .

The 32-year-old is a major doubt for Spurs' final game of the season at home to Everton on Sunday as a result, but a near three-week turnaround to the European showpiece at least gives the defender ample time to rest up.

The injury was reportedly picked up in the first half of the surprise comeback, leaving Vertonghen with some work to do prove his fitness for the final against the Reds at the beginning of next month.

Kane has been out of action since suffering an ankle injury in the first leg of Spurs' quarter-final triumph over Manchester City back on April 9.

Speaking about his chances of making the game in the Spanish capital, the England captain admitted he was still a few weeks away from a return to action.

Matthijs De Ligt could be heading the Premier League as Ajax make transfer admission

He told BT Sport: "Hopefully (I'll be fit), the rehab has gone well so far.

"I've started straight-line running this week and that's why I've been okay to train today, I didn't want to cut any corners.

"We'll see but so-far so-good so if it carries on like it should then hopefully but we've still got a few weeks."

For large periods of the tie, Matthijs De Ligt could be heading the Premier League as Ajax make transfer admission who would be joining Liverpool in the final.

The latest on Andy Robertson's injury as Liverpool gear up for potential Premier League-clincher against Wolves

The Amsterdam outfit took a two-goal lead into half time after goals from Matthijs De Ligt and Hakim Ziyech.

However, a second-half hat-trick from Lucas Moura - including a 96th-minute winner - clinched the victory for Pochettino's men to set up an all-English final.
