Tottenham stabbing: Tributes paid to ‘sweet and loving’ schoolboy as cops hunt knifemen

Tributes have been paid to a “handsome and loving” 16-year-old schoolboy stabbed to death by a skate park in Tottenham.

Stelios Averkiou died in hospital after being fatally stabbed in the thigh at Lordship Recreation Ground on August 1.

Detectives believe the broad daylight attack was carried out by two men, one of whom was seen fleeing the play area on a bicycle, at around 2pm.

The teenager was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died from his stab wound nine days later.

There have been no arrests, police said.

Stelios’s “devastated” mother Maria had posted a picture of the teenager visiting a relative’s grave.

“He isn’t ready yet bapou [Grandad],” she wrote.

“Help him find his way please.”

Stelios’ Godmother Maria Stanforth created a fundraiser for the boy’s funeral which is on its way to reaching her £5,000 target.

She wrote: “On 10 August heaven gained an angel!

“Our handsome and loving Stelios was taken from us all, far too soon, at the very young age of 16.

“Stelios leaves behind his mum Maria, little sister, who adores him and sees him as her hero, his grandparents, Godparents, God brothers and sisters, aunties, uncles, cousins and many friends.

“As Stelios’ Godmother, I am creating this fundraiser on behalf of his mum, who needs all the help and support she can get at this horrific time.”

Stella Vasiliou added: “R.I.P dear sweet Stelios. Your life was taken way too soon. Thinking of you all at this sad time. Praying God gives you all the strength to get through this.”

A post-mortem examination took place on Friday at Haringey Mortuary and gave a provisional cause of death as sharp force trauma to the left thigh.

The Metropolitan Police said the family are “devastated” as officers urge people who witnessed the broad daylight attack to come forward.

DCI Dan O’Sullivan, who is leading the investigation into Stelios’ murder, said: “While work continues to piece together the exact circumstances of the events that led to Stelios being attacked, we have established that two male suspects were involved.

“Following the attack they made off towards the south end of Lordship Rec – one of them may have been on a bike.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the recreation ground from around 2pm on 1 August and who may have seen something that could assist this investigation to contact us immediately."
